horizontal rule  Coach Andy Rose  -  12/21/09
horizontal rule
We were deeply saddened to hear of the recent passing of former SYS Assistant Coach Andy Rose. Andy was the Venice branch coach of the Sharks and the Head Swim Coach of Venice High School in 2006-2007. Andy was only 32 and reportedly passed away from complications stemming from a planned hip replacement surgery. He will be remembered as a talented, enthusiastic coach who was much loved by his swimmers. Before coming to the Sharks, he had been the Head National Team coach for the BR Ryall YMCA Swim Team in Glen Ellyn, IL. At the time of his death, he was the head coach of the Palatine Swim Team in Palatine, Illinois.

According to the Herald-Tribune obituary in the Dec. 20th edition, services will be private, but a celebration of his life will be held Jan. 9th at his family's home in Venice. Further details on Andy are available at www.ppdswim.org. A facebook page has also been set up in his rememberance -  ANDY ROSE

There were more participants and volunteers than ever and the rave reviews are still coming in from all involved. Without the dedication and long hours put in by volunteer Co-Race Directors Kyle Davis and Steve Brown, this year's success would not have been possible. Additionally, many thanks are extended to the Shark Parent Volunteers, coaches, and especially the Shark swimmers who gave up their much-treasured Sunday morning to volunteer at the event. Kyle Davis has posted a Post-Race Report & Thank-You's on this year's triathlon. Thanks again to all involved!

Several Shark swimmers were in Ft. Myers the weekend of June 12th - 14th to compete in National and State level Open Water competitions.

After attending the 2009 National Open Water Select Camp, Marissa Harrington and Kata Fodor swam in the the USA National Open Water 5K held Friday, June 12th, and finished 11th and 12th, respectively, closely following winner Chloe Sutton with times of 1:01:04 and 1:01:05. On Saturday, the water was calm and it was a beautiful day in Ft Myers, but the age group swimmers had jellyfish and baby brown stingrays to deal with. The water was extremely warm and not the usual temp in which the kids are used to swimming. The following boys participated in the Jr. Olympics 2.5K: Patrick Wall won the event with a 30:22, Roman Zaremba placed 4th with a 32:03, and Dirk Hamel-Wood was 6th with a 32:08. The Sharks only female swimmer, Meghan Buckley, placed 5th in Sr. Champs with a 34:12. SYS placed 6th overall at the Open Water Jr. Olympics with only 3 boys representing the Sharks, and 11th overall in Sr. Champs with only one Shark swimmer. Congratulations to these swimmers!

horizontal rule  More on Suits  -  6/2/09
horizontal rule
From Coach Klein: The attached PDF file will further clarify the USA Swimming position on suits for competition. We have entered a new era and these rulings have to be created to ensure fair and equitable competition for everyone. FINA, the international parent organization, has made a determination of which suits currently meet their standards. USA Swimming automatically adopts whatever rulings are made by FINA. The basics are that 202 High Tech suits have been passed for competition while 136 have been denied. Those denied can apply with a new variation, so the list might change. All the suits we use from our sponsor, Speedo, are okay for competition.

Of note in the file is the comment that suits not on the list, that are not consistent with the High Tech materials, are still allowed [such as our Speedo Endurance], but they are limited for males - knees to navel, and women - hips to shoulders. None of this affects what we have been doing, we remain ahead of the curve. We will keep everyone abreast of any further changes.

horizontal rule

The Sarasota Sharks, led by 15 Seniors, successfully defended their girls, boys, and combined titles by sweeping the 2009 YMCA Short Course Nationals Championship held April 6th thru 9th in Fort Lauderdale. This was the fifth straight title for the girls team dating back to 2005, the third straight title for the boys and the combined team, and the third straight Shark sweep of all three titles. The Sharks, with 46 swimmers, took their largest team ever to Y Nationals. A total of 231 teams and 1,675 swimmers competed in the 4 day, 42 event meet.

The girls team won a very close race with last year's runner-up Middle Tyger Y, by a scant 12.5 points (477 pts. to 464.5 pts). The boys had a slightly easier time, despite 2 relay DQ's and a DQ'd win in the mile, in out-distancing Schroeder YMCA by 40 points (337 to 297). In the combined team race, the Sharks comfortably beat runner-up Middle Tyger by 193.5 points (814 to 620.5). Two YMCA national records were set by the Sharks: Current Y-Nat record holder in the 500 & 1000 free, Corinne Showalter, set her 3rd individual Y-Nat record by winning the 400 IM event with a time of 4:12.76 while the boys' 800 free relay team of Nick Caldwell, John Orban, Pat Ceddia, and Mark Cox set a new Y-Nat record by over 4 seconds with a time of 6:38.95. Additionally, the girls' 800 free relay team of Corinne Showalter, Kata Fodor, Marissa Harrington, and Cha-cha Bugatti broke the old Y-Nat record but didn't set the new mark as they finished second in the event to Middle Tyger.

Sharks winning individual event National Championships were: Corinne Showalter in the 200 IM, 400 IM and 1000 free; John Orban in the 1000 free; and Patrick Ceddia in the 500 free.

horizontal rule  New Shark Record Category  -  10/1/08
horizontal rule
Coach Klein has instituted a new Shark record category based upon the USA Swimming IMX Challenge Single Year Point Totals published by USA Swimming. The IMX Challenge is a motivational program whereby swimmers will be scored and ranked nationally on their performance in a combination of five or six events. Using Hy-Tek’s Single-Year Age Group Power Points, all USA Swimming registered athletes earn an “IMX Score” based on the cumulative point total of the combination of IMX events for their age level. Swimmers will participate in a designated combination of five or six events and, based on the power points scored for each of those swims, earn a combined score that will be called the IMX Score. These combined scores will be ranked by single ages with rankings and recognition available on the USA Swimming website. In order to receive an IMX score, a swimmer must legally swim each IMX event for their age level in a sanctioned meet at least once during the season. A swimmer’s times will count for the entire season-so if a swimmer ages up during a season the IMX score on the My USA Swimming page will show a score for his/her lower age group and their new age group.

The following single age groups and event combinations will be tabulated and scored for both men and women:
9 & Under; 10-year olds: 200 IM, 200 Free, 100 Back, 100 Brst, 100 Fly;
11-year olds; 12-year olds: 200 IM, 400/500 Free, 100 Back, 100 Brst, 100 Fly;
13, 14, 15, 16, 17, and 18 -year olds: 200 IM, 400 IM, 400/500 Free, 200 Back, 200 Brst, 200 Fly.

We will periodically run a Top 5 or Top 10 IMX point report per age group for the current season and include it alongside the current meet results so swimmers can see how they are faring. The current high point holders are listed on the records page under the "about us" tab of this website. Note that the data only goes back to 2006 as this program is relatively new. For more information on the IMX Point System click on: IMX Points.

All in all, it was a great weekend for the 14 & under Sharks, as three J.O. records were broken, 12 Shark records fell, national cuts were made, and numerous lifetime personal bests were achieved.

The Shark relays broke three Junior Olympic records: the 10 & under girls 200 free relay team of Spence & Shealyn Atkins, Nancy Hu, and Samantha Smithburger broke the old record by almost a full second but were out-touched by the Fast Lane Aquatics team who set the new record; the boys 11 & 12 relay team of Roman Zaremba, Ian Amistoso, Liam McKane, and Patrick Wall set two new J.O. records in the 200 medley (1:53.01) and the 400 medley (4:05.07) relays. The old J.O. 400 medley relay record was broken by over 7 seconds by the boys. Twelve new Shark records were set (7 relays and 5 individual): the 10 & under girls relay team of Atkins, Atkins, Hu, and Smithburger smashed the 200 free (1:54.16) and the 200 medley (2:09.50) Shark records; the girls 13 & 14 400 medley relay team of Shelby Leonard, Ashley Reid, Rachel Harrington, and Cha-cha Bugatti broke the old Shark record with a time of 3:57.83; the boys 11 & 12 relay team of Amistoso, Zaremba, Wall, and Rees Cattermole broke the 200 free (1:43.05) and the 400 free (3:47.97) records, while the boys 11 & 12 relay team of Zaremba, Amistoso, McKane, and Wall broke the 200 medley (1:53.01) and 400 medley (4:05.07) Shark records - the 400 by over 12 seconds. As for individual Shark records: Shealyn Atkins reset the girls 10 & under 100 yard backstroke record with a 1:07.28 while her sister, Spence Atkins, reset the girls 10 & under 100 yard breaststroke record with a 1:16.75; Spence Atkins and Nancy Hu both broke the 10 & under girls record in the 100 fly with Hu setting the new mark with a time of 1:06.64; and finally, Ian Amistoso broke two of his own 11 & 12 boys Shark records in the 50 breaststroke (30.45) and the 100 breaststroke (1:05.64).

Top ten overall point finishers in their respective age groups were: 10 & under girls - Spence Atkins (3rd), Nancy Hu (4th), and Shealyn Atkins (5th); 10 & under boys - Campbell Lee (5th) and Patrick Bowers (8th); 11 & 12 girls - Kara Plocharsky (9th); 11 & 12 boys - Ian Amistoso (3rd), Patrick Wall (5th), and Roman Zaremba (9th); 13 & 14 girls - Cha-cha Bugatti (3rd), Ashley Reid (4th), Shelby Leonard (7th), and Rachel Harrington (8th); and 13 & 14 boys - Tucker Atkins (T-3rd) and Derek Pridemore (T-8th).

Over 150 swimmers braved the cool temperatures for the chance to swim in the first long course meet of 2008 at Selby. Highlights of the meet included Ian Amistoso smashing the old Florida Swimming record in the 11-12 boys 200 meter breaststroke by almost 3 seconds with a 2:45.64 and at the same time resetting his Shark record in the event, and Ryan Lochte, from the Daytona Beach Speed, setting three new Selby long course pool records (200 free, 100 back, and 400 IM). Ian may have been the youngest boy swimmer entered in the meet, but he swam like a pro, making USA Swimming Top 10 cuts in the 12 year old category in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Being a current Florida Swimming recordholder puts Ian in elite company with former Sharks Annie Babicz (7 records), Kim Linehan (4 records), and Jeff May (1 record), and Shark teammate Corinne Showalter (2 records).

The Full Meet Results, Individual Shark Results, and a Photo Page from the Senior Circuit Long Course Meet held January 18th thru 20th are available. Coaches' Team Manager Results file is also available.
