The Sharks took what was probably their largest team ever (42 swimmers) to Ft. Lauderdale, April 1st thru 4th, to defend their 2007 YMCA National Short Course Championship title. Four days and forty-two events later, the Sharks had swept the girls, boys, and combined titles for the second straight year, besting second place Middle Tyger YMCA by almost double their points in the combined category (1,036.5 points to 538 points). The Shark girls more than doubled second place Triangle Area YMCA's points (648 to 300), and the boys team beat second place Schroeder YMCA by more than 100 points (388.5 to 266.5). Ten individual Shark records were set: Ashlee Linn set five new records, four of which she already had - three in the 15-16 category (100 free, 100 back, and 200 IM) and two in the Senior/Open category (100 free and 100 back); Corinne Showalter reset two of her own records in the Senior/Open category (200 IM and 400 IM) - the 400 IM by over 6 seconds; and Mark Cox reset records in the 15-16 category (100 fly and 200 fly) and in the Senior/Open category (200 fly).

Coach Shofe has announced that USA Swimming has released the final rankings of their 2008 Club Excellence Program and the Sarasota Sharks were named a Gold Medal Club. We are the first YMCA swim team to achieve the Gold Medal level.

Only 16 swim teams are classified nationally as Gold Medal clubs for 2008; the Sharks are the only Gold Medal team in Florida. This ranking allows the Sharks to apply for up to $12,000 in funding from USA Swimming.

This achievement was made possible through the summer performances of Shark swimmers as well as our attendance at USA Swimming national competitions. More information is available from the USA Swimming website. Congratulations to the entire Shark organization - swimmers, coaches, and parents!!

Over 150 swimmers braved the cool temperatures for the chance to swim in the first long course meet of 2008 at Selby. Highlights of the meet included Ian Amistoso smashing the old Florida Swimming record in the 11-12 boys 200 meter breaststroke by almost 3 seconds with a 2:45.64 and at the same time resetting his Shark record in the event, and Ryan Lochte, from the Daytona Beach Speed, setting three new Selby long course pool records (200 free, 100 back, and 400 IM). Ian may have been the youngest boy swimmer entered in the meet, but he swam like a pro, making USA Swimming Top 10 cuts in the 12 year old category in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Being a current Florida Swimming recordholder puts Ian in elite company with former Sharks Annie Babicz (7 records), Kim Linehan (4 records), and Jeff May (1 record), and Shark teammate Corinne Showalter (2 records).

The Full Meet Results, Individual Shark Results, and a Photo Page from the Senior Circuit Long Course Meet held January 18th thru 20th are available. Coaches' Team Manager Results file is also available.
