The Sharks took 45 age group swimmers to the Florida Swimming "B" Winter Championships (West) held at the Long Center pool in Clearwater on December 8th. Making new J.O. cuts were Talia Daniel (50 fly) and Matthew Pelton (50 free and 50 fly). Swimming all personal bests were: Hayden Aristizabal, Leila Ayad, Katie Boehm, Tyler Carmichael, Connor Colett, Reid Colett, Talia Daniel, Cindy Dong, Daniel Erlenmeyer, Eric Erlenmeyer, Katie Kramer, Matthew Pelton, and Daniel Pierce. The Sharks took 98 swimmers to the Gator Holiday Invitational held November 30th thru December 2nd in Gainesville and came away with a big win. Despite the shamefully overcrowded meet conditions, the Sharks won the combined title by more than doubling 2nd place Bolles' total points (1211.5 to 524 pts.), and also won the girls' and boys' team titles. New Shark records were set in the following individual events: Ashlee Linn set a new mark in the girls 13-14 200 yard backstroke with a time of 2:02.75; Corinne Showalter broke Bridget Bowman's 1989 record in the senior girls' 200 IM with a time of 2:02.03; Mark Cox reset his own record in the boys' 15-16 200 fly with a 1:50.90; and last, but certainly not least, Ian Amistoso broke a pair of Shark records in the boys' 11-12 category - twice in the 50 breast (from 1981) with a 30.77 and again with a 30.68, and in the 200 breast with a 2:26.19 breaking the old record by an amazing 9.7 seconds. In relay events, Shark records also took a beating: the girls' 13-14 200 free relay team of Ashlee Linn, Shelby Leonard, Rachel Harrington, and Cha-cha Bugatti broke the 2006 record with a time of 1:38.90; the girls' Senior 400 medley relay record was actually broken by both the "A" and "B" teams with the "A" team of Blair Collins, Sara Conner, Corinne Showalter, and Kata Fodor getting the record with a time of 3:52.57; and the boys' 11-12 200 medley relay team of Roman Zaremba, Ian Amistoso, Liam McKane, and Patrick Wall continued to lower their own record with a time of 1:55.17. Shark Individual High Point Winners in their age groups were Ashlee Linn (13-14 girls), Patrick Ceddia (15-16 boys), and Corinne Showalter (Senior girls). Senior 1 swimmer Kata Fodor competed in the Hungarian National Short Course Meters Swimming Championships held November 16th-18th. Kata finished with three 3rd place bronze medals (200, 400 & 800 free) and one 6th place (100 free). Kata is hoping to make the Hungarian National Team for next month's European Championships and next August's Summer Olympics. Congratulations and Good Luck to Kata! The Sharks hosted 260 visiting swimmers from as far away as Barbados and Jamaica at the annual Tom Herrington Memorial Meet held at Selby over the November 16th-18th weekend. The weather was great and the swimmers came through with some outstanding swims. Ian Amistoso reset his Shark record in the boys 11-12 100 yard breast with a time of 1:06.65, and then joined his 11-12 teammates Roman Zaremba, Liam McKane, and Patrick Wall to set a new Shark mark in the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:56.89. Sarasota's Corinne Showalter set a new pool record in the women's 1000 free with a time of 9:55.95. The Sharks took over 100 age group swimmers to the WFLA Fall Invitational (aka "The Halloween Open") and came away with another combined team win. Ian Amistoso did his magic again and broke another Shark record, this one in the 11-12 boys 100 yard breaststroke with a time of 1:07.29. This swim also qualified as a "National Reportable Time". At the Florida Swimming House of Delegates Meeting held this past weekend Sherwood Watts was named the age group coach of the year for the 3rd time in the past 4 years, and Larry Shofe was named the co-senior coach of the year (Coach Shofe has received this award for the past 3 years). Congratulations to Coach Watts and Coach Shofe for winning these awards! For the 3rd straight year Brooke Barnett, a freshman at LSU, has been named to the Scholastic All-American Team by USA Swimming. Joining Brooke on the prestigious list were Shark swimmers Becky Evenson, Marissa Harrington, Drew Crete, and Matt Kaminske. More than 1,000 swimmers, nationwide, were named to the team for combining athletic and academic success. Swimmers have to achieve at least a 3.50 GPA as a high school sophomore, junior or senior AND must compete in an individual event in a selected national championship. The Sharks brought home the combined team title despite the absence of the high school swimmers. Senior 1 swimmers Mckayla Lightbourn, Patrick Ceddia, and Mark Cox have been picked to attend the 2007 Speedo National Select Camps joining 57 other elite young swimmers from around the country. Coach Steve Brown has also been named as an assistant men's coach for the camp. The camps will be held October 11th - 14th. Selection is based upon fastest event times and total IMX Power Point scores from May 1st to August 31st. The list of camp invitees is posted. Congratulations to Mckayla, Patrick, Mark, and Coach Brown! Senior 1 swimmer Kata Fodor competed in the Hungarian Swimming Championships held July 25-29, in Budapest. Kata had lifetime bests in five of the six events she entered (50, 100, 400 & 800 free and the 400 IM). Kata also had three top 8 finishes (3rd - 800 free, 7th - 400 free, and 8th - 200 free). She broke the Shark senior girls record in the 100 meter freestyle (from 1981) with a 58.95. She now has a chance to compete in the European Short Course Championship to be held in December in Hungary.
Coach Shofe and ten Shark swimmers made the trip to Indianapolis July 31st thru August 4th for the ConocoPhillips U.S. National Championships. Top 50 performances were turned in by Corinne Showalter (9th - 1500 free, 12th - 800 free), Ashley Largo (20th - 1500 free, 23rd - 800 free, 48th - 400 free), Ryan Crete (30th - 800 free), Austin Detra (36th - 800 free, 45th - 1500 free), and Lindsey Largo (38th - 800 free, 44th - 1500 free). Qualifying National cuts for next year's meet were made by Ryan Crete (400 & 800 free), Austin Detra (800 & 1500 free), Ashley Largo (800 & 1500 free), Lindsey Largo (800 free), and Corinne Showalter (800 & 1500 free). Three new Shark records were set: Ryan Crete broke the 1982 record of Jeff Wentz in the Open 400 IM with a time of 4:38.16; the girls' 800 free relay team of Nicole Maglich, Corinne Showalter, Ashley Largo, and Lindsey Largo broke the record set last year at Nationals with a time of 8:22.76; and the boys' 800 free relay team of Spencer Maglich, Austin Detra, Jordan Hershberger, and Ryan Crete reset their record from last Summer's Sectionals with a time of 7:46.14. The girls' team finished tied for 38th in the team category, while Corinne Showalter finished tied for 53rd in the individual girls' points standings. The Individual Shark Results are posted. Fourteen Shark swimmers helped to lead the Florida Zone team to the combined team win in the 2007 Southern Zone Age Group Championship held July 31st thru August 4th at the University of Houston. The Florida Zone girls team also won their category and the Florida boys finished a close third in theirs. Finishing in the Top 30 of Individual High Point by Age Group were: 11-12 boys - Ian Amistoso (14th); 13-14 girls - Ashlee Linn (winner) and Ashley Reid (T-26th); 13-14 boys - Tucker Atkins (18th) and Kirt Davis (T-25th); 15-18 girls - Mckayla Lightbourn (T-5th), Sara Conner (T-5th), and Rocky Raybon (T-7th); 15-18 boys - Patrick Ceddia (T-2nd), Matt Kaminske (12th), Mark Cox (T-13th), Drew Crete (T-25th), and John Orban (T-27th). Nine Shark records were broken - Ashlee Linn set new records in the 13-14 girls' 100 free and the open girls' 50 back; Ian Amistoso reset his own record in the 11-12 boys' 100 breast; Pat Ceddia broke Tripp Schwenk's record in the 15-16 boys' 200 free; and Mark Cox set new records in 5 different categories - the 15-16 boys' 50 free, 100 fly and 200 fly, and the open boys' 100 and 200 fly. Earning new U.S. Summer National qualifying cuts were: Matt Kaminske in the 1500 free, Pat Ceddia in the 400 free, and Mark Cox in the 200 fly. The Full Meet Results and Individual Shark Results are posted. In the Open Water portion of this meet, the Florida Zone team won all three categories - combined, boys, and girls teams. The following Sharks participated in these events: 11-12 girls 3K swim - Charlotte Wilhelm (24th); 11-12 boys 3K swim - Ian Amistoso (24th); 13-14 girls 5K swim - Ashley Reid (29th) and Ashlee Linn (51st); 13-14 boys 5K swim - Kirt Davis (43rd) and Tucker Atkins (44th); 15 & over girls 5K swim - Sara Conner (2nd), Rocky Raybon (14th), and Mckayla Lightbourn (15th); 15 & over boys 5K swim - Pat Ceddia (winner), Matt Kaminske (3rd), John Orban (13th), Drew Crete (23rd), and Mark Cox (26th). Florida Swimming announced that Shark Senior 1 swimmer Kelsey Clark is the 2007 female recipient of the Irene & Bud Hackett Scholarship award. The scholarship award of $1,000.00 was presented to Kelsey at the 2007 FS Senior Championship meet at Indian River Community College. Each year, Florida Swimming awards two $1000.00 scholarships, one to a male and one to a female member of Florida Swimming, in memory of Florida Swimming's long time Executive Director, Irene Hackett and her husband Bud. The criteria for the Scholarship is as follows: The nominee must show the ability to be a strong leader with his or her peers; Must be a graduating high school senior; The nominee must be a current Florida Swimming Member in good standing and has been with Florida Swimming as a member for at least 2 years; They must graduate with at minimum of a 3.25 GPA (unweighted); The nominee should be a well-respected member of their community (i.e. volunteer, civic organizations, church, school, etc.) Kelsey also had to write an essay explaining what it means to be a leader to your peers in today’s society. Congratulations and Good Luck to Kelsey who will be attending and swimming for Dartmouth College, in Hanover, NH this Fall. Sixty-two Shark swimmers were in Ft. Pierce as the Sharks won their 3rd straight Senior Champs title over the July 26th thru 29th weekend. The Sharks won the combined title with a total of 2,176.5 points to 2nd place ATAC's total of 879.5 pts. The girls won by almost 1,000 points over 2nd place Bolles, and the boys won by almost 200 points over 2nd place ATAC. Finishing in the Top 10 of Individual High Point by Age Group were: 15-16 girls - Lauren Piper (winner), Katheryne Muth (2nd), and Blair Collins (6th); 15-16 boys - Matt Torres (8th); Open girls - Lindsey Largo (winner), Nicole Maglich (T-6th), Cha-cha Bugatti (T-6th), and Brooke Barnett (9th); and Open boys - Jordan Hershberger (3rd). One Shark record was broken - Katheryne Muth toppled Annie Babicz's 15-16 girls 50 free record with a blazing 27.67. Earning new U.S. Summer National qualifying cuts were: Lindsey Largo (800 free) and Nicole Maglich (200 free). Earning new qualifying Y-Nat cuts for next Spring's meet were: Cha-cha Bugatti (200 IM), Blair Collins (100 free), Sara Conner (200 breast), Mark Cox (800 free), Jonathan Everhart (100 & 200 breast), Rachel Harrington (100 free and 200 IM), Katheryne Muth (100 back), Tyler Revels (100 breast and 200 IM), Corinne Showalter (100 fly), Hayley Tilton (50 free), and Matt Torres (100 fly and 200 IM). The Full Meet Results and Individual Shark Results are posted. The Sharks sent 90 swimmers to the Area 3/5 Summer (SC) Championships held in St. Petersburg over the July 27th - 29th weekend. This is a "below J.O." meet which requires swimmers to not have their J.O. cut in the age group events they enter. Making new qualifying J.O. cuts (2007 cuts) for next Spring's meet were: Samantha Cahoone (100 IM, 100 & 200 free), Sophie Cattermole (100 fly), Keanan Dols (50 fly and 100 breast), Ava Jones (100 free and 200 IM), Jessica Piper (100 fly and 200 breast), Derek Pridemore (400 IM), and Pablo Suarez (200 IM). The Full Meet Results and Individual Shark Results from Area 3/5's are now posted. The Sharks, all 70 strong, won the Florida Swimming Long Course Junior Olympics by a whopping 511 points over second place Bolles. This was the 4th straight J.O. win for the Sarasota Sharks dating back to Spring 2006. The four day meet was held July 19th through 22nd at the UF Pool in Gainesville and featured 45 teams from around Florida. Six new individual and four relay Shark records were set over the weekend. Natalie Hegwein and Tucker Atkins each got a pair of individual Shark records, Natalie in the 10 & under girls 50 free and 100 back, and Tucker in the boys 13 & 14 100 and 200 fly. Additionally, Ian Amistoso broke the boys 11 & 12 100 breast record from 1982 and Ashlee Linn broke the girls 13 & 14 100 back record from 1984. On the relay side, the boys 13 & 14 relay team of Kirt Davis, Derek Pridemore, Tucker Atkins, and Johnny Silvers broke both the 200 and 400 free relay records (the 200 being 21 years old). Shark swimmer Corinne Showalter (USA) finished 3rd in the women's 400 meter freestyle at the Pan Am games being held in Brazil. Corinne swam a pair of lifetime bests (4:13.62 and 4:13.72) in the prelims and finals with a podium finish and a bronze medal to show for her efforts. Fellow Shark swimmer Mckayla Lightbourn (Bahamas) narrowly missed the semi-finals in the 100 breaststroke finishing 17th with a lifetime best 1:15.97; in the 400 IM, Mckayla finished 10th with a 5:10.12; she also swam on the seventh place finishing women's 800 meter freestyle relay team. Mckayla finished 7th in the 200 IM, 13th in the 200 Breast, and 14th in the 200 Back. Mckayla also broke the Shark 15-16 girls' 200 IM record from 1989 with a 2:22.80. Lauderdale for the Southern Sectionals meet held the weekend of July 12th thru 15th. The Shark Open, blessed with the best weather in its 7 year history, attracted over 500 swimmers from 20 teams including many Olympians. Swim Atlanta swimmers claimed 7 of the individual records and all 3 of the relay records with UF swimmers taking the remaining three individual marks. USA Swimming has announced that Corinne Showalter has been added to the US Pan American Games Team in the 400 freestyle. The Sharks had beautiful weather on tap for the Kent B. Holdren Memorial Meet held May 18th through 20th at the Selby Aquatic Center. The Sharks played host to 250 swimmers from as far away as Jamaica for the 3 day, 5 session meet. The Sharks celebrated the successes of the 2006-2007 year at the annual awards banquet held on Sunday, May 6th at the Pine View School Auditorium. Participation trophies were presented to all Shark swimmers and the 11 graduating Senior swimmers (Brooke Barnett, Kelsey Clark, Chelsea Gillespie, Caitlin Hudak, Kelly Kane, Ashley Largo, Gabby Leibbrandt, Carlyn Lungmus, Jessica Pall, Nick Perez, and Erin Rhoades) made their farewell speeches. Winning this year's Mary Champney award was Marissa Harrington; Matt Torres won this year's Olympic Spirit Award; and the inaugural FTT award was presented to Sara Conner. Featured speaker was former Shark and new Venice coach John Bruenning who spoke of his swimming career as a Shark to the audience. Shark Masters' Coach, Rick Walker, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Shark Masters' essay contest winner, Erin Rhoades. Senior 1 team swimmer Mckayla Lightbourn, on a 3 week road trip with U.S. Spring Nationals, Y-Nationals, and the Carifta Games (back to back to back), again captured high point honors for the 13-14 girls and led the Bahamian Team to a second place finish at the 2007 Carifta Games held in Kingston, Jamaica, April 7th thru 10th. The Carifta Games is an annual sports competition among the island nations of the Caribbean. As she has for the past three years, Mckayla came home with plenty of individual medals, all gold, as she won all 11 events in which she was entered. Additionally, she was on the winning girls 400 medley and 800 free relays, the second place 400 free relay, and the third place 200 free relay team. Mckayla set eight new individual Carifta records in the process: the 50, 100, and 200 breast; the 200, 400 and 800 freestyles; the 200 back; and the 400 IM. In addition, Mckayla had all best times in the 11 individual events she swam. If that wasn't enough, Mckayla broke the Shark record for the girls' 13-14 200 meter breast previously held by Annie Babicz. Congratulations to Mckayla for another great Carifta meet!
The Sharks took what was most likely their largest team ever (40 swimmers) to Ft. Lauderdale, April 2nd thru 5th, and swept the YMCA National Short Course championship by winning the girls, boys, and combined titles in convincing fashion. The Sharks scored a combined total of 903 points nearly doubling the 461 points of the second place team (YOTA). The boys scored 50 points more than second place Countryside to win their title, and the girls scored 201 points more than second place West Shore. Overall, it was a dominating show by the Sharks as the other teams just couldn't match the Sharks in speed, endurance, and overall depth. Corinne Showalter set two new individual YMCA National Records (in the 500 and 1000 freestyle) and broke a third (1650 free) as well as leading off the YMCA record setting women's 800 free relay team which included Shark teammates Kata Fodor, Marissa Harrington, and Ashley Largo. Shark records also took a pounding with Lauren Piper resetting her old record in the 13-14 girls 200 IM; Corinne breaking Kim Linehan's record in the 15-16 & Senior 500 free; Blair Collins setting the new mark in the 15-16 & Senior 200 backstroke; and the previously mentioned 800 free relay team of Showalter, Fodor, Harrington, and Largo setting the new Shark standard. On the boys' side, Mark Cox reset the Shark records in the 15-16 & Senior 200 Fly and the 15-16 100 fly, and the 800 free relay team of Austin Detra, Pat Ceddia, Mark Cox, and Drew Crete set the new Shark standard. Nine Senior Shark swimmers made the trip to East Meadow, NY for the USA Swimming Spring National LC Meet held March 27th thru 31st. Ashley Largo became a 2008 Olympic Trial qualifier when she broke the cut twice in the women's 800 meter freestyle. Two Shark records were also broken, both in the 15-16 girls category and both previously held by a Linehan: in the 200 back category, Blair Collins broke Kris Linehan's previous mark of 2:18.70 set in 1985 with a 2:18.12; and in the 200 butterfly, Raquel Raybon broke Kim Linehan's record of 2:18.18 set in 1978 with a 2:17.97. The Sharks won their second Florida Swimming championship title in as many weeks as the Senior team swimmers outscored Clearwater Aquatic 1,328 to 1,149 points. The FS Short Course Senior Championship meet was held March 1st thru 4th at the Long Center in Clearwater. The Sharks won their third consecutive Florida Swimming Junior Olympic championship title at the UF pool in Gainesville over the Feb. 22nd - 25th weekend. The Sharks pulled out one of the closest, and certainly one of the most exciting, finishes in J.O. history as they rallied from 54 points down with just 2 events remaining to pull out a 22 point victory over Bolles. The 13-14 girls, led by Lauren Piper, Shelby Leonard and Ashlee Linn's 1-2-3 finish in the 200 backstroke, started the comeback charge by erasing the deficit with a 70 point net gain for the Sharks. The 13-14 boys then took over, led by Derek Samies' 3rd place finish in the 200 back, to secure the 2007 short course title with a total of 2,661 points. Mckayla Lightbourn, Lauren Piper, and Derek Samies, in their final J.O. meet, went out in style as they led the Sharks with a combined total of 308 individual points and took part in rewriting 8 of the 9 Shark records broken during the meet. Lauren brought home the girls' 13-14 high point award and set Shark records in 4 individual events (100 back, 200 back, 100 fly, and 400 IM). She also set a new Florida J.O. record in the 400 IM with a time of 4:20.05. Derek reset the Shark record in the 13-14 boys' 400 IM with a time of 4:14.40. Four Shark relay records were reset all in the 13-14 age group: the girls 200 medley relay team of Shelby Leonard, Mckayla Lightbourn, Lauren Piper, and Ashlee Linn set a new mark with a time of 1:51.36, while the girls 400 medley relay team of Linn, Lightbourn, Piper, and Cha-cha Bugatti set the new mark of 3:58.96; on the boys' side the 400 free relay team of Kirt Davis, Lucas Thompson, Tucker Atkins, and Derek Samies smashed the old mark set in 1977 by over 3 seconds with a time of 3:20.65, while the 400 medley team of Mufaddal Kadibhai, Davis, Atkins, and Thompson set the new mark of 3:48.76. Top ten overall point finishers in their respective age groups were: 10 & under girls - Ellen Berdusco (2nd) and Gabby Theofanous (3rd); 13-14 girls - Lauren Piper (1st), Mckayla Lightbourn (4th), Ashlee Linn (7th), and Cha-cha Bugatti (10th); 13-14 boys - Derek Samies (4th) and Kirt Davis (7th). The Sharks entered a whopping 203 swimmers in the 2007 Y-State swimming championships held Feb. 9th thru 11th at the YMCA Aquatic Center in Orlando. When it was all over the Sharks had won their 20th Y-State championship and 3rd in a row. One new Shark record was set by Samantha Cahoone who broke the girls 8 & under mark in the 200 IM with a time of 2:54.03. Both teams were coming off long bus trips the day before, but the SYS girls outswam the IRCC girls by the score of 175 to 84 while the IRCC boys beat the SYS boys 183 to 79; overall, the IRCC team narrowly outpointed the Sharks by the score of 267 to 254. In a warm-up to the 2007 championship season, the Sharks hosted 210+ swimmers for the Senior Circuit Long Course Meet held January 12th thru 14th at the Selby Aquatic Center. Two pool records fell as American Record Holder (in the 100 meter free) Amanda Weir from USC and Swim Atlanta broke the Selby 100 free mark with a 58.10 effort, and Ricardo Monasterio from Gator Swim Club reset his own pool record in the 800 free with a time of 8:18.96. The Sarasota Sharks again dominated the Sarasota-Herald Tribune's "All-Area High School Swimming" team. Riverview High's Corinne Showalter and Sarasota Christian's Austin Detra were named as the top high school swimmers of the year from the area; this was Corinne's second consecutive year as the top girl swimmer. The Sharks took 7 swimmers (photo) to the U.S. Open held in West Lafayette, Indiana the weekend of Nov. 30th - Dec. 2nd: Blair Collins, Corinne Showalter, Austin Detra, Ashley Largo, Rocky Raybon, Lauren Piper, and Mckayla Lightbourn (representing the Bahamas). In addition, former Ohio State swimmer Nicole Maglich also represented the Sharks at the meet. Top 16 finishes were recorded by: Blair Collins (11th - 200m back), Ashley Largo (12th - 800 free, 16th - 400 free); and Corinne Showalter (11th - 800 free and 6th - 400 free). The women's 800 free relay team of Maglich, Showalter, Largo, and Collins finished 11th. The women's team finished 11th overall in the women's club team category. At the Florida Swimming House of Delegates Meeting held this past weekend, the Sharks collected the following honors for 2006: Lauren Piper was named the 13-14 girls LC swimmer of the year; Corinne Showalter was named the female senior swimmer of the year; Sherwood Watts was named the age group coach of the year; and Larry Shofe was named the senior coach of the year. Coach Watts won the age group coach award in 2004 and Coach Shofe won the senior coach award in 2005. Congratulations to these swimmers and coaches! Brooke Barnett, a senior at Sarasota Christian School and Kelsey Clark, a senior at Pine View School, both Senior 1 team members, have been named to the 2005-2006 Scholastic All-American Team by USA Swimming. This is Brooke's second consecutive year achieving this honor. More than 1,100 swimmers, nationwide, were named to the team for combining athletic and academic success. Swimmers have to achieve at least a 3.50 GPA as a high school sophomore, junior or senior AND must compete in an individual event in a selected national championship. Included on the list are Corinne Showalter (400 & 800 free), Ryan Crete (1500 free), Austin Detra (1500 free), and Annie Babicz (50 free & 100 breast). Coach Shofe took 7 swimmers to the ConocoPhillips National Championships held Aug. 1st thru 5th in Irvine, CA. This meet attracted the elite swimmers from around the country. Representing the Sharks were Corinne Showalter, Kata Fodor, Ashley Largo, Nicole Maglich, Spencer Maglich, Austin Detra, and Ryan Crete. Also in the meet was Shark record holder Annie Babicz, swimming for California Aquatics. Making their Olympic Trial cuts were Austin Detra and Ryan Crete in the 1500 free (Corinne also lowered her Trial cuts in both the 400 and 800 free). New National Championship cuts were made by Ashley Largo in the 800 free and Austin Detra in the 400 free. Top 50 individual finishers for the Sharks were: Corinne Showalter (10th - 400 free and 12th 800 free); Ryan Crete (21st - 1500 free); Ashley Largo (33rd - 800 free); and Austin Detra (33rd - 1500 free). Annie Babicz finished 26th in the 100 breast and was on the 6th place 400 free relay team and the 18th place 400 medley relay team for Cal Aquatics. New Shark records were set by: Austin Detra who broke Jeff May's 1997 record in the 15-16 boys 400 free by almost 2 seconds with a time of 4:01.77; Spencer Maglich who reset his own record in the senior boys 200 free with a 1:54.03; and the girls relay team of Corinne Showalter, Nicole Maglich, Kata Fodor, and Ashley Largo who finished 13th and smashed the senior 800 free relay record by over 10 seconds with a time of 8:24.04, and the 400 free relay record with a time of 3:58.70 (finishing 32nd). Three Shark swimmers, Tucker Atkins, Cha-cha Bugatti and Jessica Piper, competed at the Southern Zone Championship held August 1st thru 5th in Atlanta. Tucker, who had just aged-up into the 13-14 boys category the week before, had one top 20 individual finish (19th - 50 free) and one top 20 relay finish (11th - 200 free relay); Cha-cha had two top 20 finishes (15th - 200 IM and 19th - 200 free); Jessica had three top 20 individual finishes (18th - 50 back, 19th - 100 back, and 20th - 100 breast) and one top 20 relay finish (6th - 200 medley relay). These three swimmers helped their Florida Swimming team to a 7th place finish of 14 teams from across the South. Coach Rene Piper also made the trip as an assistant coach for the Florida Swimming squad. Congratulations to these Sharks!! The Sharks won the Florida Swimming Senior Champs in rather lopsided fashion outscoring the second place team by over 1500 points. The season-ending meet was held July 27th-30th at the Indian River CC pool in Ft. Pierce. A new National Championship cut was made by Blair Collins in the 200 back - her first. The Sharks took one of their largest teams (68 strong) to Gainesville, July 20-23, for the Florida Swimming Long Course Junior Olympic championship. By the end of the weekend, the Sharks had won the combined team title by a whopping 216 pts. over 2nd place Bolles. The Sharks also won the girls and boys team titles. This win completed a sweep of the 2006 J.O. titles for the Sharks following their win last March in the Short Course championship. There were many memorable swims over the weekend, including Rocky Raybon's J.O. record breaking effort in the girls 13&14 400 IM with a time of 4:59.82. High point winners in their age groups were: Rocky Raybon (13-14 girls - 52 pts.) and Tucker Atkins (11-12 boys - 47 pts.). The Shark girls finished 2nd overall and the boys finished 5th. A total of 80 teams attended the 5 day meet in Ft. Lauderdale over the July 12th - 16th weekend, with the Sharks sending the 3rd largest team in size and the largest team in number of entries. Corinne Showalter again went under the 2008 Olympic Trial cuts in winning the 400 and 800 freestyles; Ashley Largo won the girls' 1500 free and Ryan Crete won the boys' 1500 free. In addition, new U.S. National cuts were made by Austin Detra (1500 free) and Spencer Maglich (200 free). Shark records were again under assault with a total of 5 individual and 7 relay records being reset. In the individual category, Spencer Maglich grabbed three new Senior boys' records: In the 50 free, he topped his own record set in 2004, and in the 100 and 200 free, he reset 1980's records held by Tripp Schwenk. The other individual records were set by Carlyn Lungmus in the girls' Senior/Open 50 back (relay leg) with a 31.51, topping Chelsea Gillespie's record set last year at Sectionals; and Rocky Raybon in the girls 13-14 200 fly breaking Kylie Schaefer's record from 1998. In the relay category the girls reset three of the Senior records as follows: the 800 free relay team of Showalter, A. Largo, Fodor and Mandy Snell reset the record from 2005 with a 8:34.48; the 200 medley relay team of Lungmus, Sara Conner, Nicole Maglich and Katheryne Muth reset the 2005 record with a 2:03.64; and the girls 400 medley relay team of Blair Collins, Conner, N. Maglich and Showalter reset the record from 2005 with a 4:29.97. On the boys side: the 200 medley relay team of Luis Vargas, Jason Shoemaker, Mark Cox, and S. Maglich reset the Senior/Open record from 2001 with a time of 1:53.42; the 400 medley relay team of R. Crete, Shoemaker, Cox, and Maglich reset the 1979 record with a 4:04.92; and the 800 free relay team of Maglich, Detra, Crete and Jordan Hershberger reset their own record from 2005 with a 7:47.85. The Sharks hosted just over 350 visiting swimmers at the 6th Annual Shark Open held at Selby on June 22nd thru 25th. For the first time, this meet was increased to 10 sessions over 4 days and the weather held out fairly well until Sunday. The final session, Sunday's finals, was washed out by a severe thunderstorm cluster that was stirred up by a tropical low over the state. All in all, the weekend was a success with two Shark long course records falling: 10 year old Cameron Davis broke the 10 & under girls 50 butterfly record from 1998 by a scant 0.06 seconds with a 34.43; and the boys 10 & under 200 medley relay team of Roman Zaremba, Ian Amistoso, Liam McKane, and Patrick Wall reset their own record from 2 weeks ago by an even slimmer 0.01 second margin with a 2:30.42. A total of 10 long course pool records were reset (4 relays and 6 individual) with Kathleen Hersey from Swim Atlanta and Ricky Berens of Mecklenburg picking up 3 individual records each. The Sharks took 120 swimmers to the GCST Summer Invitational held at the Florida Gulf Coast University aquatic center in Fort Myers on June 9th - 11th. It was a hot and soggy weekend thanks to Tropical Storm Alberto but when it was all over the Sharks came out on top winning the combined, boys, and girls team championships. Two new Shark records were set: the boys 10 & under 200 meter medley relay team of Roman Zaremba, Ian Amistoso, Liam McKane, and Patrick Wall smashed the old record set in 1998 by over 6 seconds with a 2:30.43 - way to go!; also the boys 11-12 200 free relay team of Yusuf Kadibhai, Andy Watts, Michael Stock, and Tucker Atkins broke the old record set last year with a 2:00.86. Two Sharks won age group high point honors: Spence Atkins won the 8 & under girls title and Cameron Davis won the 10 & under girls title. Coach Shofe and 13 of his fastest swimmers flew to the Ultra Swim Grand Prix meet held in Charlotte, NC over the June 8th thru 11th weekend. Top 24 finishes by the Sharks were made by: Blair Collins (19th - 200 back); Ryan Crete (10th - 1500 free, 12th - 800 free, 20th - 200 back); Austin Detra (17th - 1500 free, 18th - 800 free); Ashley Largo (12th - 1500 free); Spencer Maglich (17th - 100 free); Lauren Piper (21st - 200 back); Corinne Showalter (9th - 1500 free, 10th - 800 free); and Mandy Snell (16th - 1500 free). The girls 400 free relay team of Lauren Piper, Sara Conner, Mandy Snell, and Kata Fodor finished 17th, while the same group finished 20th in the 400 medley relay. It was a very small (350 swimmers), but star-studded Kent B. Holdren Memorial Meet held May 19th thru 21st at the Selby Aquatic Center. A total of 5 Olympians (Brad Ally, Vipa Bernhardt, Renate DuPlessis, Ryan Lochte, and J.B. Walsh) made the trip from Gainesville and were on hand to take part in the meet. One pool record fell, as Ryan Lochte reset his own 100 back record from last year with a time of 58.27. Likewise, one Shark record fell as Derek Pridemore broke the 11-12 boys 200 back record with a time of 2:36.14. The Sharks held their annual awards celebration on Sunday, May 7th at the Pine View School Auditorium. Participation trophies were presented to all Shark swimmers and the 7 graduating Senior swimmers (Seth Clayton, Ryan Crete, Patricia Duret, Kristen Murphy, Jason Shoemaker, Kevin Shofe, and Mandy Snell) made their farewell speeches. Winning this year's Mary Champney award was Mark Cox; Ryan Crete won this year's Olympic Spirit Award. Featured speaker was former Shark Olympian and multiple record holder Kim Linehan who spoke of her swimming career to the hundreds in the audience. Another Shark Olympian, Tripp Schwenk, was in attendance and gave a short talk to the crowd. Special thanks to Peg Rauch and Donna Barnett for leading the effort to pull-off this year's event. Thanks to Steve Largo once again for the use of the Pine View auditorium, and Pat Piper for announcing the awards. There were many others who helped and we thank all of you, as well as the coaches, and of course the stars of the show, our swimmers. It was an exciting weekend, as the Sharks took just over 100 swimmers to the Highlander Long Course Invitational meet held in Orlando, April 29th-30th. This was the first long course meet for the whole team this season, and as you can imagine, personal best times were everywhere. Even the ride home was exciting as the charter bus carrying the Juniors and Seniors broke down near Lakeland and the swimmers spent over 2 hours outside in the hot sun waiting for a replacement bus. Special thanks to charter bus driver "Willie" for hitch-hiking to the nearest store to bring the swimmers much-needed water, gatorade and ice cream. Junior 1 team swimmer Mckayla Lightbourn captured high point honors for 13-14 girls and led the Bahamian Girls Team to the championship title at the 2006 Carifta Games held in Bridgetown, Barbados, April 6th thru 9th. The Carifta Games is an annual sports competition among the island nations of the Caribbean. As she did last year, Mckayla came home with plenty of medals, including 4 individual gold, 4 individual silver, and 1 individual bronze. In addition, she won another silver medal as part of the 13-14 girls 800 free relay team. Mckayla set two new Carifta records in the process: in the 200 meter IM (2:27.64) and the 400 meter IM (5:11.25), and five new Bahamian national age group records (400 & 800 free, 200 fly, and 200 & 400 IM). Congratulations to Mckayla for another great Carifta meet! The Sharks Y-Nat Team made up of 35 qualifiers competed in the 2006 Spring Y-Nationals Short Course Championship held April 4th thru 7th at the International Swimming Hall of Fame Complex in Ft. Lauderdale. This meet is the YMCA national short course championship with over 1500 swimmers competing from over 225 YMCA teams from all over the country. The Sharks, led by the girls' winning total of 417 points, finished 2nd overall to the YMCA of the Triangle Area (NC) in a repeat of the Sharks' 2005 results. The girls team bested 2nd place Triangle, to win the girls' category by a scant 7.5 points. The boys team ended up tied for 6th place with the Triangle boys winning the title. Kata Fodor had a national championship win in the 1000 free along with a 3rd (1650 free), 4th (500 free), and 6th place finish (400 IM). Other top 8 finishes were turned in by: Sara Conner (5th - 1000 free); Ryan Crete (2nd - 500, 1000 & 1650 free, 4th - 400 IM); Austin Detra (3rd - 500, 1000 & 1650 free, 7th - 200 free); Ashley Largo (5th - 1650 free); Lauren Piper (7th - 400 IM, 8th - 100 back); Raquel Raybon (6th - 200 fly, 8th - 1650 free); Corinne Showalter (2nd - 200 & 1650 free & 200 IM, 3rd - 400 IM); and Mandy Snell (4th - 1650 free). In the relays, the Girls 800 free relay team of Kata Fodor, Corinne Showalter, Mandy Snell, and Ashley Largo got the national championship win with a 7:26.77. Seven Shark records were also broken during the meet: Corinne Showalter reset her 15-16 record in the 400 IM (4:19.90) and broke Annie Babicz's record in the 200 IM (2:03.87); she also broke the National YMCA record in the 1650 free; Lauren Piper broke 3 Shark records including two held by Shark coach Helena Wilhelm in the 13-14 100 and 200 back with times of 57.84 and 2:05.51, respectively. Lauren also broke Annie Babicz's 13-14 200 IM record with a 2:07.08. Ryan Crete broke Jeff May's 1650 Shark (and YMCA National) record with a blazing 15:12.33. Finally, Austin Detra reset his own Shark record in the 15-16 500 free with a 4:30.76. Highlights of the meet included Corinne Showalter's 1650 freestyle neck and neck duel with Westshore's Leah Gingrich with the girls finishing 0.02 seconds apart and both breaking the National Y record, Ryan Crete's similar 1650 duel with Triangle's Charlie Houchin with both breaking the National Y record, and the Girls' 400 medley relay team securing the win with a "must have" 10th place, come from behind finish. The Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has finally woken up and changed the antiquated qualification rules for the Regional and State Final high school meets that have been in effect for the last few seasons. Also, in response to an increasing amount of abuse of the system, the FHSAA has severly restricted the ability to transfer schools for athletic participation purposes. The Sharks took a record 67 swimmers to Orlando the weekend of March 16th - 19th and came away with a combined team victory at the 2006 Florida Swimming Short Course Junior Olympics championship. The boys also finished first while the girls finished 2nd. Similar to the J.O. win in July 2004, the most impressive part of the combined victory was that it was a balanced effort for the Sharks. The team had no swimmers in the Top 3 individual high point competitions and no age group team high point winners yet outscored 2nd place Bolles by 20.5 points. One individual and 4 relay Shark records fell: Raquel Raybon reset her Shark record in the girls 13-14 200 yard fly by over a second with a 2:04.41; the 11-12 girls 400 yd relay team of Meghan Buckley, Ava Jones, Charlotte Wilhelm, and Cha-cha Bugatti broke the 1 year old record with a 3:50.03; the girls 13-14 200 free relay team of Katheryne Muth, Ashlee Linn, Lauren Piper, and Shelby Leonard broke the 1980's era record with a 1:39.85; the girls 13-14 400 medley relay team of Lauren Piper, Mckayla Lightbourn, Raquel Raybon, and Katheryne Muth smashed by 4 seconds the 1980's record with a 4:00.38; and finally the boys got in the act too, with the 13-14 400 medley relay team of Mufaddal Kadibhai, Kirt Davis, Mark Cox, and Pat Ceddia breaking the 1991 record by over 2 seconds with a 3:38.97. Two Shark records tumbled: Raquel Raybon broke the 13-14 girls record in the 200 fly set in 1988 by Olympic Trial Qualifier Bambi Bowman with a 2:05.60; and the boys 13-14 200 medley relay team of Luis Vargas, Tyler Revels, Mark Cox, and Tim Bradley reset the Shark record from December 2005 with a 1:44.37. Congratulations to all the Shark swimmers, coaches and parents! Eleven of the younger Sharks represented the team well in Orlando the weekend of January 27th-29th at the Central Florida Racing IMX Challenge. Over 1,000 swimmers from 24 teams participated in this unique meet with swimmers competing in selected distance events similar to a pentathlon in track and field. When it was all over the Sharks (all 10 & unders) finished 14th overall with Gabrielle Theofanous taking home 2nd place in the Girls 9 & under pentathlon (200 free, 100 breast, 100 fly, 100 back, 200 IM). Gabrielle also had all personal best times for the weekend. Other Sharks finishing in the top 20 overall in their age groups were: 9 & under girls pentathlon - Bethany Leap (7th) and Megan Griffiths (8th); 10 year old girls pentathlon - Ashley Ehmann (18th); and 10 year old boys pentathlon - Rees Cattermole (17th) . New J.O. cuts were made by: Faryn Duff (100 IM); Ashley Ehmann (50 free, 100 back); Bethany Leap (100 breast); and Gabrielle Theofanous (100 back). The Sharks took some of their Junior 1 and Senior 1 swimmers to Ft. Pierce on Saturday, Jan. 28th for a dual meet against Indian River Community College. The wind was whipping and the mercury was dropping, but 250 athletes braved the elements to swim in the Florida Swimming Senior Circuit Long Course Meet held at Selby on January 14th & 15th. Senior 1 swimmer Corinne Showalter journeyed to Melbourne, Australia with the U.S. National Junior team to compete in the 2006 Victorian Championships held January 3rd thru 7th. Corinne helped the USA team to a first place finish with a 5th place in the 800m free and a 7th in the 400m free. Corinne also swam on the women's 800m free relay team which finished 5th. She took a 12th in the 200m butterfly, a 15th in the 400m IM, and a 16th in the 200m free. You can check the results at Victorian Championships or at USA Swimming. Congratulations, Corinne!
