We should have the results of our effort in the next week. A very special thank you goes out to Linda Showalter who stepped in and did a great job with Pat Piper in organizing the event ... Thanks Linda!!!

We will need all the help we can get for the upcoming Thanksgiving Meet (Turkey Meet), please continue to help the team and the kids by volunteering ... we really appreciate all your hard work!!! Also, please be sure to sign the Volunteer Log Books documenting your time located in the skybox - it helps the Y (and the Sharks) with their funding.

horizontal rule

Two Shark swimmers recently gained some national exposure. Annie Babicz competed in Ft. Lauderdale on August 12th and 13th in the 2002 Summer National Championships. This elite long course meet featured the very best swimmers in the USA and served as selection trials for the 2002 Pan Pacific Championships Team, 2003 World Championship, Pan American Games and World University Games Teams. Annie had a great swim in the 100 Breaststroke reaching the "C" finals and finishing 22nd, competing against the likes of Kristy Kowal, Megan Quann and Amanda Beard. Annie also swam in the 100 Butterfly finishing 85th in the event which was won by Natalie Coughlin with Jenny Thompson finishing 2nd. The overall results for this meet can be found at the USA Swimming site.

Corinne Showalter recently competed in the Southern Zone 2002 Meet in San Antonio, Texas as a member of the team representing Florida. This long course meet was held July 30th thru August 3rd and brought together the best age group swimmers from across the Southeast. Corinne represented the Sharks and Florida extremely well with top 10 finishes in the 11 & 12 girls 50 meter Breast (6th), 100 meter Breast (5th) and 200 Breast (9th). In addition, Corinne swam the Breaststroke leg of the winning 200 Medley Relay team.

Congratulations to both of these Shark swimmers and their coaches!

Gold Team:  Blair Collins, Ashley Knoch, Lauren Piper and Jenna Seuch.

Black Team:  Cha-Cha Bugatti, Kavanaugh Bugatti, Mckenzie Clark, Sarah Ashley Demshar, Patricia Gillezeau, Nikki Gutzmann, Grant Hart, Casey Kane, and Melinda Spinella.

Important things from the SYS Parent Meeting/Registration:
Thanks to all who attended our second annual combined one-day registration/parent meeting on August 26th, 2001. Communication on such a large team as ours is of vital importance, and keeping an accurate and current database is crucial. My apologies for any inconveniences that this format may cause for any of our parents, but this is the best method we have come up with to date to make this huge task of registration go as easy as possible.
For those of you who could not attend, you will need to get your registration packets and checks into your child's coach, and also get with the YMCA accounting department and fill out new enrollment forms and AFT forms (automatic funds transfer). The coaches should have the necessary paperwork if you do not still have your forms.
The main focus of the parent meeting was to get out important information to our parents. The most important issue facing our team is the need to get more parents involved in volunteering for all of our fund-raising events, especially our meets (which are put on for our kids to show their progress from all of their hard work). Bart McCoy spoke about his experiences the last few years helping out at all of the team functions, and how their whole family enjoys spending time together at team functions, and about all the great friends he and Sondra have made on our team. Cindy Wallace spoke about the parent volunteer log that we have been keeping the past few months. If we do not get more participation from our parents, we may institute some type of system to track volunteer hours and possibly fine those who do not put in their required time. I hope it does not come down to this. This is a worthwhile effort and supports our own kids. All we ask is for each parent to do only what they are required and we should have no problems getting our events run properly.

Misc. notes:
  • Please notify your coach in writing if your child will not be swimming in a particular meet. This will help eliminate any future problems with escrow accounts.
  • The study room is up and running at the ESJ pool, but we need more volunteers to help monitor the room. Without supervision, the kids who really need to work cannot concentrate and get their work done. Thanks to those who did volunteer at the meeting, but we still could use some more.
  • We need more social activities for our parents. We need volunteers to organize such activities.
  • Please be courteous when parking at our meets. The people waving you in and out are only volunteers and don't deserve any negative comments or abuse. We have a growing YMCA and a huge swim team, and sometimes we can't all park where we want. Let's all just get along!!

  • v  Couple of things...  -  8/22/01
    horizontal rule

Mike has returned from Senior Nationals, where Annie Babicz placed 15th in the 100 meter breaststroke. Be sure to congratulate her. Practice for the rest of the week for the national group will be at 3:00 to 4:30. Morning practices are to begin on September 5th. Reminder: A parents meeting and swimmer registrations are being held at the pool from 3 to 6PM on Sunday the 25th. All parents are expected to attend. That should do it for today.

All groups except the National team are on a break right now and will be returning on August 23th. J.O.'s was a great success and results should be posted soon; sorry for the inconvience. Coach Mike is current in Fresno, California with Annie Babicz for Senior Nationals; Coach Rob is holding National team practices at 4:00-5:30 P.M. until Mike returns. Long Course Nationals turned out to be an incredible trip; the team swam very well and it was a lot of fun. Results for that should be posted when Mike returns.

If you went to Nationals and have pictures from the trip, we need them for the gallery! E-mail any and all pictures to digitalwave@home.com. The calendar has been updated. That should do it for now, expect more updates within a few days as I am going to try and keep the news much more up to date than it has been lately.

Expect them to be finished within the next couple of days. Also, I understand that the Calendar is incomplete, since I don't have anything more than this month's meet schedule. Please send me an E-mail if you have anything to be added to it. The search feature also hasn't been fully programmed yet.

Enjoy the site and check back often for the latest news and happenings!
