Sarasota Herald Honors Sharks - 12/30/07

The Sharks again dominated the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's 2007 "All-Area High School Swimming" team. Booker High's Mckayla Lightbourn and Riverview High's Corinne Showalter shared the "Swimmer of the Year" award for the girls and Sarasota Christian's Austin Detra was named as the top boy swimmer of the year for the area. This was Corinne's third consecutive year and Austin's second straight year winning the top swimmer award.

Shark girls making it to the All-Area team were: Jesse Bessire, Shelby Leonard, and Katheryne Muth from Sarasota High; Ashley Reid from Lakewood Ranch High; Blair Collins, Becky Evenson, Lauren Piper, Rocky Raybon, and Cha-cha Bugatti from Riverview High; Kata Fodor from Booker High; Marissa Harrington and Rachel Harrington from Manatee High; Sara Conner from Sarasota Christian; and Hayley Tilton from St. Stephens Episcopal. Shark boys making it to the All-Area Team were: Matt Torres and Pat Czupryna from Lakewood Ranch; Mark Cox and Tyler Revels from Venice High; Kirt Davis from Sarasota High; Drew Crete, Jonathan Everhart, Matt Kaminske, Marty Rauch, and Derek Samies from Riverview High; Tim Bradley from Booker High; Patrick Ceddia from Cardinal Mooney; and John Orban from Sarasota Christian.

For the third straight year, Coach Larry Shofe (Riverview) was named as Coach of the Year on the girls' side with Coach Steve Brown (Sarasota Christian) again picking up the honor on the boys' side.

Bradenton Herald Selects Harrington & Ceddia - 12/27/07

The Bradenton Herald has selected Rachel Harrington of Manatee HS and Patrick Ceddia of Cardinal Mooney HS as their 2007 All-Area High School Swimmers of the Year. They were honored in the December 26th edition of the local paper. Receiving "honorable mention" honors were Shark swimmers: Kaycee Perry (Bayshore HS); Jacque Garcia, Fernando Gutierrez, and Shawn Leonard (Cardinal Mooney HS); Ashley Reid, Corey Allison, Pat Czupryna, Matt Torres, and Lucas Thompson (Lakewood Ranch HS); Marissa Harrington (Manatee HS); and Michael Berdusco (St. Stephens HS). Congratulations to these Shark swimmers!

Sharks Named Pinch-a-Penny All-Stars - 12/16/07

Three Shark swimmers, Mckayla Lightbourn (Booker HS), Corinne Showalter (Riverview HS), and Austin Detra (Sarasota Christian HS) made the Pinch-a-Penny All-State Team for 2007. In addition, a number of Sharks made the All-Area Team. Congratulations to all of these Shark swimmers.

Shark Trio Commits to D1 Colleges - 11/15/07

Three Shark Senior swimmers, Austin Detra, Blair Collins, and Sara Conner, have verbally committed to attend and swim for Division 1 colleges next fall. Detra and Collins will swim for the University of Florida Gators, while Conner will swim for the West Virginia University Mountaineers. Congratulations to these swimmers and their families!

Lightbourn and Detra are Double FHSAA State Champs - 11/4/07

Austin Detra (1A) and Mckayla Lightbourn (2A) highlighted the FHSAA state finals weekend as both earned double individual state championships. Corinne Showalter (3A) also earned an individual state championship title. On a team basis, Riverview High School successfully defended their 3A girls state swimming title and Booker High School finished 3rd in the 2A girls competition. The FHSAA state finals meet was held November 1st thru 3rd at the International YMCA pool in Orlando. Click here for a list of the 40 Shark State Finalists (individual events).

1A - Three schools (Sarasota Christian, Cardinal Mooney, and St. Stephens) and 7 Shark swimmers qualified for individual events in the 1A portion of this meet.

As mentioned, Austin Detra won 2 FHSAA state championships (in the 200 and 500 free) and led Coach Steve Brown's Sarasota Christian boys to an 11th place overall finish. John Orban was 4th in the 500 free and 5th in the 200 IM. Sara Conner was 4th in the girls 500 free and 6th in the 200 free and single-handedly placed the Sarasota Christian girls team in 22nd place.

Cardinal Mooney, with individual qualifiers Pat Ceddia, Fernando Gutierrez, Jacque Garcia, and relay qualifier Shawn Leonard, placed 17th in the boys category and 37th in the girls. Pat Ceddia had two podium finishes (2nd in the 200 free and 3rd in the 500 free), Fernando Gutierrez was 20th in the 100 back, and the boys relay team finished 13th (400 free) and 15th (200 free). Jacque Garcia was the only member of the CM girls team and finished 15th in the 200 IM.

The St. Stephens team consisted solely of Shark swimmer Hayley Tilton. Hayley had a 10th place finish in the 100 free and a 15th in the 50 free. Her points led to St. Stephens 29th place finish. 1A Full Results and 1A Shark Results are available

2A - In the 2A category, two schools were represented by 7 Shark swimmers: Booker High sent 5 Sharks while Manatee High sent two to the 2A State Finals.

Booker's Mckayla Lightbourn was a double state champion (200 IM and 100 breast) and broke the 15-16 Shark girls record in the 200 IM with a 2:03.78. Kata Fodor narrowly missed a state championship in the 500 free finishing 2nd by 0.02 seconds and had a 4th place in the 200 free. Meghan Buckley finished 13th in the 100 back, and Mckenzie Clark had a pair of 16th place finishes in the 200 free and 500 free. The Booker girls 200 medley relay had a 3rd place podium finish. To cap off the meet, the 4 Booker girls in 5th place overall prior to the night's final event, swam to a 2nd place in the 400 free relay vaulting to 3rd place and a podium finish in the overall team category. Tim Bradley, Booker's lone boy swimmer, had an 11th place in the 50 free and a 19th in the 100 fly, and accounted for the Booker boys 44th place overall finish.

Manatee HS was represented by sisters Marissa Harrington and Rachel Harrington. Marissa, who six weeks ago injured her knee and at one point thought that she could not compete this season, swam to a 7th place finish in the 500 free and a 14th place in the 200 free. Rachel had career best times in all her swims and finished 6th in the 500 free and 7th in the 200 free. 3A - In the 3A category, Riverview High had the largest contingent of Shark qualifiers by far with 14; Lakewood Ranch had 5; Sarasota had 4; and Venice High had 3.

Coach Larry Shofe's 8 member Riverview girls team successfully defended their 3A state title from last year by outpointing 2nd place Gainesville Buchholz by 5.5 points. Corinne Showalter led the Riverview girls by winning the 500 free and finishing 2nd in the 200 free. The Riverview girls 200 medley relay team of Lauren Piper, Showalter, Rocky Raybon, and Becky Evenson also won a state championship in their event. Senior Blair Collins finished 4th in the 100 back and 11th in the 200 free. Becky Evenson finished 10th in the 500 free and 14th in the 100 back. Kaitlyn Plocharsky had a 20th place in the 100 back. Rocky Raybon finished 7th in the 200 IM and 12th in the 100 fly; Lauren Piper added a 2nd place in the 200 IM and a 9th in the 100 fly. Cha-cha Bugatti finished 5th in the 500 free and 13th in the 200 free, and Ava Jones had a 17th in the 500 free. The Riverview girls 200 free relay team (Showalter, Collins, Piper, Bugatti) finished 4th and the 400 free relay team (Collins, Raybon, Bugatti, Evenson) finished 10th. On the boys side for Riverview, Drew Crete finished 3rd in the 200 IM and 12th in the 100 back. Derek Samies finished 8th in the 500 free, while Matt Kaminske finished 4th in the 500 free and 14th in the 200 free. Jonathan Everhart finished 13th in the 500 free and 15th in the 100 breast. Marty Rauch had a 15th place in the 200 IM and a 19th in the 100 fly. Tucker Atkins had a 17th place finish in the 100 fly. The boys 200 medley relay team (Rauch, Everhart, Atkins, Mufaddal Kadibhai) finished 11th; the 200 free relay team (Crete, Atkins, Kadibhai, Rauch) finished 12th; and the 400 free relay team (Crete, Atkins, Samies, Kaminske) finished 13th. Overall, the Riverview boys team finished 11th.

Coach Sherwood Watts' Sarasota High girls team composed of 4 swimmers finished 10th overall in the 3A competition. Jesse Bessire had a 6th place finish in the 100 fly. Shelby Leonard finished 9th in the 100 back and 15th in the 100 free. Katheryne Muth had a 3rd place in the 100 free and a 7th place in the 50 free. The Sarasota girls 200 medley relay team (Leonard, Bessire, Sarah Ashley Demshar, Muth) finished 8th, and the 400 free relay team (same swimmers) also finished 8th. On the boys side for Sarasota, Kirt Davis was a one man team and finished 9th in the 500 free and 17th in the 200 free and accounted for Sarasota's 41st place finish.

Coach Rene Piper's Lakewood Ranch girls team of Corey Allison and Ashley Reid finished 37th overall. Corey had a 16th place finish in the 200 IM and Ashley had a pair of 14th place finishes in the 100 breast and 200 IM. The Lakewood Ranch boys finished 30th overall. Pat Czupryna had a 14th place finish in the 500 free. Matt Torres had a 10th place in the 100 fly and an 11th in the 200 IM. Lucas Thompson had a pair of 20th place finishes in the 50 free and 100 free.

Coach John Bruenning's 2 member Venice High boys team had all podium finishes and ended up 15th overall. Venice was led by Mark Cox who had a pair of 3rd place finishes in the 100 fly and 200 free. Mark also reset his 15-16 boys Shark record in the 100 fly with a time of 50.97. Tyler Revels also had a 3rd place finish in the 100 breast. Special thanks to Shark Coach Mark Matuszak for giving up much of his Thursday and all of his Friday to be there for the 2A swimmers, it was a huge help and much appreciated. Also, a special spirit recognition to Kaycee Perry, who despite narrowly missing qualifying for the 2A finals, made the trip on Friday and cheered on her 2A Shark teammates. Congratulations to all the Shark swimmers who participated!!

Senior 1 and Lakewood Ranch HS swimmers Corey Allison, Matt Torres, and Mike and Pat Czupryna were recently featured in the East County Sports section of the Sarasota Herald-Tribune. Corey's article and the Czupryna's article appeared on October 18th, while Matt's article appeared on Sept. 27th. Booker HS swimmer Kata Fodor was the feature of an article published on Oct. 9th by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

The Bradenton Herald also recently featured Lakewood Ranch HS teammates Corey Allison and Ashley Reid in its October 9th edition. Their article is also posted HERE.

Trisha Maddy Featured in Bradenton Herald - 10/17/07

Sarasota Shark and Bradenton Christian HS swimmer Trisha Maddy was featured on the front page of the Sports section in the Oct. 17th edition of the Bradenton Herald. The article details Trisha's accomplishments in, and out of, the swimming pool, and the challenges of being Bradenton Christian's "one person swim team".

Pat Ceddia Named SNN "High School Athlete of the Week" - 10/15/07

Senior 1 and Cardinal Mooney HS swimmer Patrick Ceddia was named SNN Channel 6's "High School Athlete of the Week". Patrick, who just returned from National Select Camp in Colorado Springs, was featured on a segment filmed at Selby on Sunday night's (10/14) broadcast. Congratulations Patrick!

High School All-Americans Listed - 6/29/07

The 2006-07 NISCA/Speedo Swimming and Diving All Americans list has been released with the following Sharks making the grade: Boys - Austin Detra (200 & 500 free) and Patrick Ceddia 500 free); Girls - Corinne Showalter (200 & 500 free), Ashley Largo (200 & 500 free), Lauren Piper (100 back & 200 IM), Kata Fodor (500 free), Sara Conner (500 free), Marissa Harrington (500 free), Brooke Barnett (500 free), and Blair Collins (100 back). Relays included the 200 Medley Relay team of Carlyn Lungmus, Showalter, Piper and Kelly Kane; and the 200 Free Relay team of Showalter, Lungmus, Chelsea Gillespie, and Collins - both from Sarasota Riverview. Making All-American consideration were Rocky Raybon (500 free) and Carlyn Lungmus (100 back). Congratulations to all these swimmers!

Ashley Largo ranked 19th in Top 100 College Recruits List - 6/1/07

Shark Senior 1 swimmer Ashley Largo, who recently signed with the University of Arkansas, has been named to the CollegeSwimming.com's "Top 100 Recruits" list for 2007. Ashley is ranked 19th overall on the list, and joins three of her future Arkansas teammates in the top 100. The Top 100 List and the accompanying Press Release are posted.

Sharks Sign Letters of Intent - 11/24/06

Shark Senior 1 swimmers Ashley Largo and Brooke Barnett recently signed National Letters of Intent to attend and swim for Southeastern Conference schools next fall. Ashley signed with the University of Arkansas and their new coach Jeff Poppell, while Brooke will swim for Louisiana State University. Click for University of Arkansas press release. Additionally, Caitlin Hudak (University of Wyoming), Erin Rhoades (Eastern Michigan), and Carlyn Lungmus (University of Connecticut) will also be attending school on athletic scholarships. Congratulations to all of these swimmers.

FHSAA State Final Results - 11/7/06

Riverview High School won the 3A girls state swimming title and Booker High School finished 4th in the 2A girls competition at the FHSAA state finals meets held November 2nd thru 4th at the Swimming Hall of Fame complex in Ft. Lauderdale. Click here for a list of the 31 Shark State Finalists (individual events).

1A - Sarasota Christian took the largest group of Shark qualifiers (4) from this category; Cardinal Mooney and Out-of-Door each had one. Top 16 finishers were: Austin Detra with a 2nd in the 200 free and 3rd in the 500 free; John Orban with a 9th in the 500 free; Brooke Barnett with a 6th in the 500 free and an 11th in the 200 free; Sara Conner with a 5th in the 500 and 7th in the 200 IM; Patrick Ceddia with a 5th in the 500 and an 11th in the 200 free. The Sarasota Christian boys relay team (Detra, Orban, Nick Perez and Rhet Rheinlander) finished 12th in the 200 Medley and 400 Free relays. The Sarasota Christian boys finished 11th overall and the girls finished tied for 17th; the Cardinal Mooney boys were 25th overall.

2A - Booker High sent 4 Sharks finalists while Manatee High sent one. Top 16 finishers were: Ashley Largo with a 2nd (500 free) and a 4th (200 free); Kelsey Clark with a 15th (500 free); Kata Fodor with a 2nd (200 IM) and 6th (500 free); Mckayla Lightbourn with a 3rd (100 breast) and a 6th (200 IM); and Marissa Harrington with a 4th (500) and a 6th (200 free). The Booker girls 400 free relay team also had a 4th place finish. The Booker girls team finished 4th overall while the Manatee girls finished 28th overall.

3A - Riverview High, by far, had the largest contingent of Sharks with 16; Sarasota High and Lakewood Ranch each had one; and Venice High had two Sharks. This category featured Shark State Champions in the following categories: Girls 200 & 500 free - Corinne Showalter; Girls 100 back - Blair Collins; Boys 100 fly - Mark Cox. Other Top 16 finishers were: Jesse Bessire with a 13th (200 IM); Blair Collins with a 12th in the 200 free; Mark Cox with a 6th in the 200 free; Drew Crete with a 15th (200 IM) and a 16th (100 back); Jonathan Everhart with a 15th in the 500 free; Chelsea Gillespie with a 14th (50 free) and a 16th (100 fly); Caitlin Hudak with a 16th (200 free); Matt Kaminske with a 9th (500 free); Kelly Kane with a 15th (100 free); Carlyn Lungmus with a 6th (100 back); Lauren Piper with two 4ths (100 back & 200 IM); Kaitlyn Plocharsky with a 15th (100 back); Raquel Raybon with a 7th (500 free) and 10th (100 fly); Tyler Revels with an 8th (100 breast); Erin Rhoades with a 14th (500 free); and Derek Samies with a 16th (500 free). In relays, the Riverview Girls were State Champions in the 200 Medley (Lungmus, Showalter, Piper, and Kane), finished 2nd in the 200 Free (Showalter, Lungmus, Gillespie, and Collins), and were 7th in the 400 Free (Lungmus, Kane, Hudak, and Gillespie). The Riverview girls team won the overall Championship, while the Venice boys finished 18th, the Riverview boys were 31st, and the Sarasota girls were tied for 41st.

Catholic States HS Results - 10/4/06

Cardinal Mooney freshman, and Shark swimmer, Patrick Ceddia led his boys team to a 6th place finish and got two individual wins (200 & 500 free) at the Florida Catholic High School Swimming & Diving Championship Meet held in Altamonte Springs on Saturday, Sept. 30th. Courtney Dowling finished 6th in the 100 breast and Fernando Gutierrez was 4th in the 100 back and 6th in the 100 fly. Two Sharks Named to Scholastic All-American Team - 9/28/06

Brooke Barnett, a senior at Sarasota Christian School and Kelsey Clark, a senior at Pine View School, both Senior 1 team members, have been named to the 2005-2006 Scholastic All-American Team by USA Swimming. This is Brooke's second consecutive year achieving this honor. More than 1,100 swimmers, nationwide, were named to the team for combining athletic and academic success. Swimmers have to achieve at least a 3.50 GPA as a high school sophomore, junior or senior AND must compete in an individual event in a selected national championship. Riverview Sweeps Tri-County Meet - 9/24/06

The Riverview High School swim team swept the boys, girls, and combined categories of the Tri-County swim meet held September 23rd at Selby. Sarasota High finished 2nd in the combined category, with Venice 4th, Lakewood Ranch 5th, Booker 7th, Cardinal Mooney 8th, Sarasota Christian 9th, and St. Stephens 10th. In the girls category, Booker finished 3rd, Venice 6th, Cardinal Mooney 7th, St. Stephens and Manatee tied for 8th, and Lakewood Ranch 10th. In the boys category, Lakewood Ranch finished 2nd, Venice 3rd, Sarasota Christian 5th, Sarasota High 6th, Cardinal Mooney 7th, St. Stephens 9th and Manatee 10th. Individual event winners were: Patrick Ceddia (Mooney - 100 free); Blair Collins (Riverview - 100 back); Mark Cox (Venice - 100 fly); Drew Crete (Riverview - 100 back and 200 IM (Tie)); Austin Detra (Sarasota Christian - 200 free and 200 IM (Tie)); Carlyn Lungmus (Riverview - 50 free); Lauren Piper (Riverview - 100 breast and 200 IM); Raquel Raybon (Riverview - 100 fly and 500 free); Tyler Revels (Venice - 100 breast); and Corinne Showalter (Riverview - 100 free and 200 free). Riverview Girls 5th - Booker 9th at Lake Brantley - 9/20/06

The Riverview High School girls finished 5th and the Booker girls finished 9th at the 2006 Lake Brantley Invitational high school meet held Sept. 16th in Altamonte Springs. Snell & Shoemaker Again Top Manatee Swimmers - 12/16/05

Mandy Snell and Jason Shoemaker were again named Manatee County's top high school swimmers of the year by the Bradenton Herald. These two Senior 1 and Lakewood Ranch H.S. swimmers were honored in the December 15th edition of the Herald. Mandy, a senior, won the honor for the 3rd straight year and was the county's top girl finisher at the state 3A high school meet in November, placing 5th in the 500 free and 7th in the 200 free. Jason, also a senior, won the honor for the second straight year and was the county's top boy finisher at the state 3A meet with a 13th in the 200 IM and a 15th in the 100 breast. Marissa Harrington, a Manatee High School freshman and also a Shark Senior team swimmer, was named runner-up in the girls category. Congratulations to these three Shark swimmers!!

2005 State HS Championship Results - 11/23/05

The Sharks qualified 21 swimmers representing 7 high schools for the 2005 Florida High School Swimming Championships held Nov. 18th - 19th in Ft. Lauderdale. When it was all over, the Shark swimmers brought home 1 individual win, 2 seconds and 3 thirds in the combined 1A, 2A, 3A meet. Bringing home the win was Riverview's Ryan Crete in the 3A 500 Free (4:27.29) - also a new Shark record. Second place finishes were turned in by Ryan Crete in the 3A 200 Free (1:41.46), and Booker's Ashley Largo in the 2A 500 Free (4:55.08). Ashley also brought home a third in the 2A 200 free (1:52.35), while Sarasota Christian's Austin Detra took a pair of 3rds in the 1A 200 Free (1:41.60) and 500 free (4:31.64). The Riverview girls relay team (with Corinne Showalter, Chelsea Gillespie, and Blair Collins) won the 200 free relay. The Riverview girls finished 5th overall in the 3A division, with the Booker girls finishing tied for 8th in the 2A division. Other Shark-led schools had the following finishes: 1A Sarasota Christian girls (T-12th) and boys (13th); 3A Riverview boys (T-13th); 3A Venice boys (T-28th); 3A Lakewood Ranch girls (T-23rd); and 2A Manatee girls (T-25th).

1A - Sarasota Christian: Austin Detra (3rd 200 Free, 3rd 500 Free), Brooke Barnett (7th 500 Free, 13th 200 Free), Sara Conner (5th 100 Breast, 5th 200 IM), Katheryne Muth (6th 100 Free, 8th 50 Free), Luis Vargas (16th 100 Fly). Barnett & Largo Named Scholastic All-Americans - 10/6/05

Brooke Barnett, a junior at Sarasota Christian School and Ashley Largo, a junior at Pine View School, both Senior team members, have been named to the 2004-2005 Scholastic All-American Team by USA Swimming. More than 900 swimmers, nationwide, were named to the team for combining athletic and academic success. Swimmers have to achieve at least a 3.50 GPA as a high school sophomore, junior or senior AND must compete in an individual event in a selected national championship. Tri-County Results - 9/24/05

Sarasota Riverview High School won the Girls, Boys, and Combined Team titles at the 2005 Tri-County High School Meet held at Selby on September 24th. New Tri-County Meet records were set by Corinne Showalter (200 & 500 free), Blair Collins (100 back), Ryan Crete (100 back & 200 free), the Riverview girls 400 free relay team (Chelsea Gillespie, Carlyn Lungmus, Blair Collins, and Caitlyn Hudak), and the Riverview boys 400 free relay team (Ryan Crete, Ryan McCormack, Drew Crete, and Kevin Shofe). Lake Brantley Results - 9/22/05

Shark College Signings - 4/25/05

The following Shark senior swimmers have signed college scholarships:

Nicole Samilo has signed a letter of intent to attend and swim for Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL. Nicole will major in pre-med and will begin classes in the Fall. She will be swimming for Head Coach Steve Eckelkamp.

Spencer Maglich has accepted a scholarship to Penn State University in State College, PA where he will swim for Head Coach Bill Dorenkott beginning in the Fall.

Kim Martella and Vanessa Cox have signed scholarships to swim for Indian River Community College in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Kim intends to major in interior design beginning next Fall while Vanessa likely will steer toward Fashion Design. Both swimmers will swim for Head Coach Scott Kimmelman.

Becky Leonard has signed an athletic scholarship to swim for Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. Becky will major in communications and is set to begin classes in the Fall. She will swim for Head Swimming Coach Ray Padovan.

Lindsey Largo has signed a full scholarship and will swim for West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV next Fall. Lindsey will major in education and be swimming for Head Coach Sergio Lopez.

Jordan Hershberger will join his brother Benji at Ohio State University in the fall. Jordan will swim for the Buckeyes under Head Coach Bill Wadley.

Former Shark swimmer Nicole Maglich continues to lead the Ohio State Buckeyes women's swim team. Nicole recently had lifetime bests in the 500 and 1,000 in a meet against Indiana University; click on Nicole News for the write-up on the meet.

Lindsey Largo Signs with West Virginia - 12/21/04

Shark Senior team swimmer Lindsey Largo has signed a national letter of intent to attend and swim for West Virginia University next fall. According to a WVU press release, swimming head coach Sergio Lopez said "Lindsey is a terrific person who will help us immediately in many key areas. She has improved rapidly the last two years, and we're excited to work with her for the next four years." Lindsey plans on majoring in education at WVU. Mandy Snell and Jason Shoemaker were named Manatee County's top high school swimmers of 2004 by the Bradenton Herald. Mandy, a junior, won the same honor last year and was the county's top girl finisher at the state 3A high school meet in November, placing 2nd in the 200 free and 4th in the 500 free. Jason, also a junior, finished fourth at Regionals in the 200 I.M. Nicole Samilo and Kim Martella, also Shark Senior team and Lakewood Ranch H.S. swimmers, were named as runners-up in the girls category. Congratulations to all four of these Shark swimmers!!

2004 State HS Championship Results - 11/7/04

The Sharks qualified 19 swimmers representing 7 high schools for the 2004 Florida High School Swimming Championships held Nov. 5th - 6th at the University of Florida pool in Gainesville. When it was all said and done the Shark swimmers brought home 3 wins, 2 seconds and a third in the newly formatted combined 1A, 2A, 3A meet. Bringing home the wins were Booker's Ashley Largo in the 2A 200 Free (1:53.91) and the 500 Free (4:57.91), and Sarasota's Spencer Maglich in the 3A 200 Free (1:41.60). Second place finishes were achieved by Booker's Lindsey Largo in the 2A 500 Free (4:57.96) and Lakewood Ranch's Mandy Snell in the 3A 200 Free (1:52.31). Sarasota Christian's Austin Detra brought home a 3rd in the 1A 500 Free (4:33.90). The Booker High girls finished 5th in the 2A division, while the Lakewood Ranch girls finished 9th in the 3A division. Other Shark-led schools had the following finishes: 1A Sarasota Christian boys (12th) and girls (23rd); 3A Sarasota boys (12th), and Riverview boys (22nd) and girls (27th).

The linked article appeared in the Oct. 7th edition of the "East County Observer" newspaper, and it was thought to be an interesting read...especially for current high school swimmers and parents. Click HERE to read the article concerning the current format of the swimming championships as set-up by the FHSAA. At least one Shark swimmer recorded a state-wide top 16 event time (11th) at Regionals, but failed to qualify for the State meet due to the limitations of the current format.

NSPI Results - 10/2/04

58 high school teams from across the state converged on Orlando October 2nd for the FSPA (NSPI) Invitational Meet held at the Y Aquatic Center. In the girls division, Sarasota Rivierview finished 6th, Sarasota Booker finished 8th, Lakewood Ranch was 13th, Sarasota Christian was 15th and Sarasota High finished 30th. In the boys division, Sarasota Christian finished 15th, Sarasota High was 19th, and Riverview was 26th. Sharks Dominate All-Area Swimming Team - 12/28/03

Once again, the Sarasota Sharks dominated the Sarasota-Herald Tribune's "All-Area High School Swimming" picks. Shark girls making it to the All-Area team were: Brooke Barnett (freshman) and Stephanie Hatch (junior) representing Sarasota Christian; Chelsea Gillespie (freshman), Courtney Hudak (senior), and Ashley O'Toole (junior) representing Riverview High; Lindsey Largo (junior) and Ashley Largo (freshman) representing Booker High; Patricia Duret (sophomore) representing Cardinal Mooney; and Mandy Snell (sophomore) and Nicole Samilo (junior) representing Lakewood Ranch. Shark boys making it to the All-Area Team were: Jordan Hershberger (junior) and Austin Detra (8th grade) representing Sarasota Christian; Spencer Maglich (junior), Nick Seuch (senior), and Michael Swick (senior) from Sarasota High; and Ryan Crete (sophomore) representing Riverview High.

Sarah Brunette and Nick Seuch Sign Scholarships - 11/24/03

Sarah Brunette and Nick Seuch (Shark and Sarasota High swimmers) have both signed National Letters of Intent to swim for Division 1 colleges. Sarah will be swimming for Marshall University in Huntington, WV. She has also been accepted into the Broadcast Journalism school. Lindsey Largo Named Scholastic All-American - 11/9/03

Lindsey Largo, a junior at Pine View School and Shark National team member, was named to the 2002-2003 Scholastic All-American Team, by USA Swimming. More than 700 swimmers, nationwide, were named to the team for combining athletic and academic success. Swimmers had to achieve at least a 3.50 GPA as a high school sophomore, junior or senior AND have competed in an individual event in a selected national championship. Lindsey was also recently re-elected as the Senior Athlete Representative to the Florida Swimming 2004 Board of Directors. Congratulations, Lindsey!!

State Championship Results - 11/3/03

The Sharks sent 31 swimmers representing 8 different area high schools to the State finals held October 30th thru November 1st in Sebastian, Florida. The following swimmers finished in the points (top 16 per event).

1A: Representing Sarasota Christian (coach Jenny Belmar): Brooke Barnett, 13th - 100 breast (1:10.68); Jordan Hershberger, 13th - 200 free (1:46.29); and Stephanie Hatch, 14th - 100 back (1:03.22). Sarasota Christian girls finished 34th, and boys finished 42nd overall.

2A: Representing Booker High: Ashley Largo, 12th - 200 free (1:59.87); and Lindsey Largo, 8th - 100 fly (59.81) and 13th - 500 free (5:10.72). Booker girls finished 30th overall.

3A: Representing Sarasota High (coach Sherwood Watts): Spencer Maglich, 3rd - 50 free (21.66) and 3rd - 100 free (47.07); Nick Seuch, 3rd - 100 fly (52.57) and 11th - 200 free (1:45.60); Sarasota boys 200 free relay (Seuch, Swick, Ames and Maglich) 9th (1:31.46); Sarasota boys 400 free relay (Seuch, Swick, Ames, and Maglich) 13th (3:25.65). Representing Riverview High (coach Mike Stewart): Courtney Hudak, 12th - 200 IM (2:12.87) and 14th - 100 back (1:01.66); Chelsea Gillespie, 15th - 100 back (1:01.85); and Ashley O�Toole, 11th - 100 fly (59.45); Riverview girls 200 Medley relay (Gillespie, Knoch, O�Toole, Co. Hudak) 8th (1:54.40), and Riverview girls 400 Free relay (Murphy, O�Toole, Ca. Hudak, and Co. Hudak) 13th (3:46.03). Representing Lakewood Ranch High (coach Rene Piper): Mandy Snell, 6th - 200 free (1:54.96) and 11th - 500 free (5:09.56); Nicole Samilo, 10th - 100 breast (1:10.87) and 14th - 200 IM (2:13.41). Sarasota Boys finished 10th, Riverview girls 17th, and Lakewood Ranch girls 27th, overall.

High School NSPI Invitational Results - 10/6/03

A large group of Shark high school swimmers were in Orlando on October 4th for the NSPI Invitational Meet. The Sharks represented the following high schools: Lakewood Ranch HS, Out-of-Door Academy, Riverview HS, Sarasota HS, and Sarasota Christian HS. The following swimmers finished in the top 10 of their events: Nicole Samilo (LWR) 7th in the 100 Breast; Mandy Snell (LWR) 10th in the 200 Free; Ashley O'Toole (RHS) 5th in the 100 Fly; Spencer Maglich (SHS) 2nd in the 100 Free and 4th in the 100 Fly; Nick Seuch (SHS) 5th in the 100 Fly and 7th in the 200 Free; and Austin Detra (SCHS) 10th in the 500 Free. In the relays: Riverview girls (Chelsea Gillespie, Ashley Knoch, Ashley O'Toole, and Kathy Knicker) finished 6th in the 200 Medley; and the Sarasota High boys (with Spencer Maglich, Nick Seuch, and Michael Swick) finished 4th in the 200 Free and 9th in the 400 Free Relay. Sharks Top Herald-Tribune All-Area Swimming - 1/1/03

The Sharks were well represented in the Sarasota-Herald Tribunes' recent "All-Area High School Swimming" picks. Spencer Maglich, a sophomore at Sarasota High School) was named Boy's Swimmer of the Year and Annie Babicz, a Sarasota High senior, was named as the Girl's Swimmer of the Year for the fourth consecutive year. Sharks (and Sarasota High School) Coach Sherwood Watts was named as Coach of the Year for the fourth time on the Boys side. Shark girls making it to the All-Area team were Brooke Barnett, a Sarasota Christian 8th grader; Sarah Brunette, a Sarasota High junior; Courtney Hudak (junior), Morgan Maglich (freshman) and Amber Butyn (freshman) representing Riverview High; Morgan Tweedie (senior) and Lacie Smith (freshman) representing Venice High. Shark boys making it to the All-Area Team were Brian Cogburn and Mark Cogburn, Venice High School seniors; Jordan Hershberger, a Sarasota Christian sophomore; and seniors T.J. Lathrop and Matt Phillips, and juniors Nick Seuch and Michael Swick from the State Champion Sarasota High boy's team.

Honorable Mention picks from the Sharks included: Bubba Bryan (Venice), Jennifer Burnside (Sarasota), Kelsey Clark (St. Stephens), Vanessa Cox (Booker), Shaina Drew (Sarasota), Patricia Duret (Cardinal Mooney), Stephanie Hatch (Sarasota Christian), Becky Leonard (Sarasota), Kristen Murphy (Riverview), Mary Pfost (Venice), and Sara Trimble (Sarasota).

Once again, the success of the Sharks is a credit to both the swimmers' and their coaches' hard work. Congratulations to all of these Sharks!

Sharks Lead SHS to State Championship - 11/22/02

The Sarasota High School Boy's Swim Team won the Florida High School 3A Championships for the second consecutive year last weekend (Nov. 21) in Ft. Lauderdale. Click for PHOTOS of the weekend. The team was lead by Shark swimmers, T.J. Lathrop (5th in the 200 IM and 5th in the 100 fly), Matt Phillips (2nd in the 100 breast and 6th in the 200 IM), Michael Swick (8th in the 500 free), Spencer Maglich (2nd in the 50 free and 3rd in the 100 free), and Nick Seuch (5th in the 200 free and 6th in the 100 fly). The Boys had 1 first and 2 thirds in the relay events. The relay team of Swick, Phillips, Lathrop, and Maglich got the win in the 200 medley relay; the team including Seuch, Swick, and Maglich took 3rd in the 200 free relay; while the team of Seuch, Lathrop, Swick and Phillips took 3rd in the 400 free relay. The Sarasota Boys racked up 230 points outdistancing 2nd place Altamonte Springs with 199 points.

Other top 16 finishes by Shark boys in the 3A championship included Brian Cogburn (Venice) who placed 15th in the 100 back.

On the girl's side, Annie Babicz (Sarasota) led the way with wins in the 100 breast and 100 fly. This was Annie's 4th straight 100 breast 3A State title and her 3rd straight 100 fly title. Courtney Hudak (Riverview) finished 10th in the 200 IM and 10th in the 100 back. Sarah Brunette (Sarasota) finished 16th in the 500 free. In the 200 Medley Relay, the Sarasota girl's team of Shaina Drew, Babicz, Jennifer Burnside, and Brunette took 9th; while the Riverview team including Hudak, Amber Butyn, and Morgan Maglich took 11th place. In the 200 freestyle relay the Sarasota team of Babicz, Brunette, Burnside, and Sarah Trimble took 12th place; the Venice team including Morgan Tweedie, Mary Pfost, and Lacie Smith finished 13th; while the Riverview team including Kristen Murphy and Butyn finished 15th. In the 400 freestyle relay the Riverview team including Hudak, Murphy and Maglich finished 7th; while the Venice team including Smith, Pfost and Tweedie took 13th place.

The great Shark swims are a credit to both the swimmers' and their coaches' hard work. Congratulations to everyone who made it to states!
