We'll post them as we receive them. 1A District 8 Psych Sheet Teams/Athletes 2A District 9 Psych Sheet Teams/Athletes 3A District 6 Psych Sheet Eight Shark swimmers have been named to the 2010-2011 Scholastic All-American Team by USA Swimming. Making the prestigious list for the third straight year were Shark swimmers Cha-cha Bugatti, Nick Caldwell, Mckenzie Clark, and Rachel Harrington. Those making the list for the first time were Cameron Davis, Taylor Katz, and Matt O'Donnell. Shark swimmer Kathryn Woolbright also made the list. Nationwide, there were 1700+ swimmers who were named to the team for combining athletic and academic success. Each year, USA Swimming recognizes its members who excel both in the classroom and in the pool. The Scholastic All-America Team is made up of high school student-athletes who have a grade point average of 3.5 or higher and who have achieved the required time standard in a single event. To be eligible for this recognition, swimmers must have completed 10th, 11th or 12th grade and must be a USA Swimming member athlete. Eligible times must be swum by June 30, 2011 and the application completed by August 1. Seven Sharks made the list last year, so swimmers, make sure you get your applications in next summer for the 2011-2012 list. Senior 1 swimmer Ashlee Linn has verbally committed to swim for the University of Florida next Fall. Ashlee is the second member of the 2012 Shark class to commit to a D1 program. She will join fellow Sharks Nicholas Caldwell and Corinne Showalter on the Gator squad. Congratulations to Ashlee and her family! Senior 1 swimmer Derek Pridemore has verbally committed to swim for Florida State University next Fall. Derek is the first member of the 2012 Shark class to commit to a D1 program. He will join fellow Sharks Mark Cox, Corey Allison, Marissa Harrington, McKayla Lightbourn, and Ava Jones on the Seminole squad. Congratulations to Derek and his family!
Sarasota High's Katheryne Muth and Riverview's Nicholas Caldwell were recently named the Florida High School Class 3A "Swimmers of the Year" for the 2010 high school season by the Florida Dairy Farmers. Shark and Riverview coach Mark Matuszak also won the 3A Girls "Coach of the Year" Award. This is a prestigious honor and recognition of the best high school athletes and coaches in the state. Once again, the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's 2010 "All-Area High School Swimming" team was loaded with Shark swimmers. Riverview High's Ashlee Linn and Nicholas Caldwell were named as "Swimmers of the Year". Shark and Riverview Coach Mark Matuszak was named as "Girls' Team Coach of the Year". Riverview's Nicholas Caldwell made the 2010 / 2011 Pinch-a-Penny All-State High School Swimming and Diving Team. This was Nicholas' second straight year making the team. The fastest High School swimmers in each event making the 18 member team. Nicholas received his honors in the 200 free and 500 free. The entire team can be seen at the Pinch-a-Penny site. The Sharks had four State Champion swimmers at the FHSAA Finals held November 11th thru 13th at the International YMCA pool in Orlando. Nick Caldwell (Riverview), last year's 3A State Champion in the 200 IM and 500 Free, added two more State Championship Titles as he won the 200 free and 500 free at the 3A Meet. Nick broke the State HS Record in the 500 free by over 5 seconds and was less than 1 second shy of beating the National HS Record set in 1983. Taylor Katz (Riverview) won the 3A girls' 500 free and also swam to a second place finish in the 200 free. Ashlee Linn (Riverview) also swam to a State Championship in the 3A girls' 100 free and a second place finish in the 100 backstroke. Sarasota High's Katheryne Muth was a State Champion in the 3A girls' 200 free and a 3rd place finisher in the 100 free. On a team basis, Coach Mark Matuszak's Riverview High School girls, led by Katz and Linn, won the 3A State Title for the 4th time in 5 years; the Lakewood Ranch girls' team, led by Danielle Valley, finished in 3rd place in the 2A category; while the Lakewood Ranch boys, led by Will Kazokas, were the top finishing Shark-supported boys' team with a 9th place finish in 2A. 1A - Three schools (Sarasota Christian, Cardinal Mooney, and St. Stephens) and 6 Shark swimmers qualified for individual events in the 1A session of this meet. FHSAA 1A Full Results are posted. Cardinal Mooney finished tied for 28th overall in the girls' team category and tied for 35th in the boys' category. Senior Jacque Garcia finished 9th in the 100 fly and 11th in the 200 IM. Senior Shawn Leonard had a 14th place finish in the 100 fly and an 18th place in the 200 free; Matthew O'Donnell finished 18th in the 500 free and 23rd in the 200 IM. The boys' 400 free relay team (O'Donnell, Leonard, and Christian Rauch) finished 15th Saint Stephens was led by Sharks Annie Berdusco and Ellie Berdusco. The girls team finished tied for 36th overall. Annie finished 19th in the 500 free and Ellie finished 14th in the 100 fly and 16th in the 200 IM. The Sarasota Christian boy's team, coached by Terri Leap, finished tied for 39th overall and was represented by Shark Rhet Rheinlander. Rhett finished 12th in the 100 back and 17th in the 200 free. 2A - Four schools (Booker, Lakewood Ranch, Bayshore, and Lemon Bay) and 11 Shark swimmers took part in the individual events in the 2A portion of the FHSAA finals. FHSAA 2A Full Results are posted. Lakewood Ranch was led by Sharks Danielle Valley and Will Kazokas. The girls team finished 3rd overall just one point out of 2nd place, and the boys team finished 9th. Danielle had a 2nd place finish in the 500 free and a 3rd place finish in the 200 free; Rebekah Baker had a 14th place in the 100 breast; Raegan Sauer finished 21st in the 100 fly and 22nd in the 200 free. The girls' 200 medley relay team (with Baker and Valley) finished 4th; the 200 free relay team (with Baker and Sauer) finished 4th; and the 400 free relay (with Baker and Valley) finished in 3rd place. Will Kazokas finished 2nd in the 100 back and 6th in the 200 free; and James Cascone finished 20th in the 100 fly. The boys' 200 medley relay team (with Kazokas, Cascone, Phil Czupryna, and Ryan Stasiowski) finished 7th; while the boys' 400 free relay (with Kazokas, Stasiowski, and Cascone) finished 9th. Booker High was led by senior Mckenzie Clark and freshmen Liam McKane, Bethany Leap, and Grace DiMeo. Mckenzie had a 6th place in the 200 free and an 11th place in the 500 free; Bethany finished 3rd in the 100 breast and 11th in the 200 IM; and Grace finished 6th in the 100 fly. The girls team also finished 7th in the 200 medley relay (Clark, Leap, and DiMeo) and 10th in the 400 free relay (with Katie Boehm) and finished 8th overall in the team competition. Liam was the sole Booker boy and finished 6th in the 500 free and 8th in the 200 IM. The boys' team (Team McKane) finished tied for 30th. Bayshore High was led by Derek Ober who had a 21st in the 100 free. Lemon Bay High was led by Rees Cattermole who had a 22nd place finish in the 200 IM. 3A - Three schools (Riverview, Sarasota, and Venice) and 21 Shark swimmers participated in the 3A individual competition. FHSAA 3A Full Results are posted. Riverview, led by Coach Mark Matuszak, won their 4th girls title in 5 years and finished 10th in the boys team competition. Tayor Katz and Ashlee Linn led the Riverview girls with individual Gold and Silver medals and 37 points apiece. Taylor took first in the 500 free and 2nd in the 200 free, while Ashlee won the 100 free and took 2nd in the 100 back; Ava Jones finished 6th in the 500 free and 10th in the 200 free; Cha-cha Bugatti finished 8th in the 200 free; Meghan Buckley finished 11th in the 100 back and 15th in the 100 free; Joanna Murphy finished 12th in the 500 free; Niamh O'Grady finished 18th in the 100 back and 23rd in the 100 free; Lexy Raybon finished 17th in the 200 IM; and Laura Toth finished 19th in the 100 fly. The girls' 200 medley relay team (Buckley, Linn, Katz, and Toth) finished 2nd; the girls' 200 free relay team (Linn, O'Grady, Toth, and Bugatti) finished 4th; and the 400 free relay team (Katz, Buckley, O'Grady, and Bugatti) finished 3rd. The boys team was led by senior Nicholas Caldwell who, as mentioned, won the 200 free and the 500 free (breaking 1 State record, nearly breaking the National record, and setting 2 new Shark records in the process). Senior A.J. Jones had a 12th place in the 100 back; while freshman Patrick Wall swam to an 18th place in the 100 breast and a 21st in the 200 IM. The boys' 200 free and 400 free relay teams (Caldwell, Jones, and Ian Amistoso) finished 8th and 9th, respectively. Sarasota High, led by Coach Sherwood Watts, finished 7th (girls) and tied for 16th (boys) in the team competition. The Sailors were led by seniors Katheryne Muth, James Pagan, Shelby Leonard, and sophomore Cameron Davis. Katheryne won the 200 free and finished 3rd in the 100 free; Shelby had a 4th in the 100 back and a 10th place finish in the 100 fly; Cameron swam to a 4th place in the 500 free and a 13th place in the 200 free; and Kara Plocharsky had a 24th place in the 100 fly. The girls' 200 medley relay team (Chyna Yelding, Leonard, and Muth) finished 10th; while the 200 free relay (Muth, Leonard, Plocharsky, and Davis) finished 10th. James Pagan led the boys team with a 2nd place in the 50 free and a 6th place in the 100 breast; senior Kirt Davis finished 9th in the 100 breast; Gregg Cesaroni finished 13th in the 500 free; and Roman Zaremba swam to a 22nd place in the 100 back. Venice High, led by Coach John Bruenning, finished tied for 20th in the boys team competition. Derek Pridemore swam to a 3rd place finish in the 500 free and a 4th place in the 200 free and was the sole member of the Venice team at States. Congratulations to all the Shark swimmers who represented their schools at States!! Senior 1 swimmer Mckenzie Clark has recently given her verbal commitment to swim for the Emory University Eagles next Fall. Emory University won the D3 Women's NCAA Swimming Championship in 2009-2010 under the leadership of Head Coach Jon Howell. Mckenzie joins an ever-growing list of the Shark class of 2011 to verbally commit to swim in college. Congratulations to Mckenzie on her accomplishment! Senior 1 swimmer Shelby Leonard has verbally committed to swim for the Eastern Michigan University Eagles next Fall. Eastern Michigan swims in the Mid-American Conference and is coached by Peter Linn. Shelby joins a growing list of the Shark class of 2011 to verbally commit to swimming in college. Congratulations to Shelby and the Leonard family!

We'll post them as we receive them. 1A District 8 Psych Sheet 2A District 9 Psych Sheet (corrected) Eight area high school swim teams participated in the 4th Annual Sarasota County High School Swimming Championships held October 19th at the Selby Aquatic Center. Riverview High finished 1st in the girls and boys team categories, with Sarasota High finishing 2nd in the girls and 3rd in the boys. Venice High finished 2nd in the boys team category and 3rd in the girls. Other Shark supported teams finished as follows: Cardinal Mooney was 4th in both the girls and boys team; North Port finished 5th in the boys; Booker High was 6th in both the girls and boys team categories; and Sarasota Christian finished 7th in the boys team category. On October 9th, eighteen area high school swim teams competed in the 14th Annual Tri-County Championships sponsored by the SYS Masters. Riverview HS finished first in the girls team category and 2nd in the boys category, while Sarasota finished 2nd in the girls and 4th in the boys. Other Shark supported schools finished as follows: Girls - Lakewood Ranch (4th), Venice (5th), Booker (7th), St. Stephens (8th), Cardinal Mooney (11th), Bradenton Christian (17th), and Sarasota Christian (18th); Boys - Lemon Bay (3rd), Venice (5th), Cardinal Mooney (6th), Lakewood Ranch (7th), North Port (9th), Booker (10th), St. Stephens (11th), Sarasota Christian (12th), Bayshore (16th), and Bradenton Christian (17th). Those making the list for the second consecutive year were Cha-cha Bugatti, Mckenzie Clark, Rachel Harrington, McKayla Lightbourn, Nick Caldwell,, and Kirt Davis. Nationwide, there were 1500+ swimmers who were named to the team for combining athletic and academic success; only 58 swimmers made the list from Florida. Swimmers have to achieve at least a 3.50 GPA as a high school sophomore, junior or senior AND must achieve a Junior National Bonus Time Standard, or swim in a selected disability championship meet or the Open Water National Championships during the qualifying period. Twelve Sharks made the list last year, so swimmers, make sure you get your applications in next summer for the 2010-2011 list. The Riverview HS girls and boys teams both finished 4th; other area teams were Booker girls (16th), Venice girls (18th), Sarasota girls (20th), Sarasota boys (11th), Booker boys (T-20th) and Venice boys (27th). Senior 1 swimmer Katheryne Muth has verbally committed to swim for the University of Alabama next Fall. Katheryne becomes the first member of the Shark class of 2011 to commit to a D1 program. Reminder for High School Swimmers - The REQUIRED FHSAA Preparticipation Physical Evaluation form can be downloaded from the following site: http://www.fhsaa.org/forms/pdf/EL02_physical.pdf. These completed forms are required to participate in high school swimming this Fall. The 2009-10 NISCA/Speedo Swimming and Diving All Americans Top 130 list was recently released with the following Sharks making the grade: Boys - Patrick Ceddia (50, 200 & 500 free), Nicholas Caldwell (200 IM & 500 free); Girls - Ashlee Linn (200 IM & 100 back). Nick's 500 free time and Patrick's 200 & 500 free times were in the Top 10 in the nation. Relays included the 200 Free Relay boys team of Caldwell, Mufaddal Kadibhai, Marty Rauch, and Tucker Atkins from Riverview High School.
Unfortunately, several Shark swimmers who had qualifying times were left off the list because their schools did not send in the applications. Congratulations to all of these Shark swimmers!

Booker High's Mckayla Lightbourn was named "Swimmer of the Year" for the girls and Cardinal Mooney's Patrick Ceddia was named as the boy "Swimmer of the Year" for the area. This was McKayla's second "Swimmer of the Year" award having shared it in 2007 with Corinne Showalter and Patrick's second consecutive year winning the top swimmer award. The Bradenton Herald has selected Patrick Ceddia of Cardinal Mooney HS as their 2009 All-Area High School Swimmer of the Year. This is the 3rd year in a row that Patrick has earned this honor. He was honored in the January 3rd edition of the local paper. Receiving "honorable mention" honors were Shark swimmers: Tori Kontor, Jacque Garcia, Fernando Gutierrez, Carlton Krebs, and Matt O'Donnell (Cardinal Mooney HS); Rebekah Baker, Raegan Sauer, Gillian Vogel, John Silvers, Phil Czupryna, James Cascone, and Matt Polk (Lakewood Ranch HS); Rachel Harrington (Manatee HS); Annie Berdusco, Ellie Berdusco, Will Kazokas, and Michael Berdusco (St. Stephens HS). Congratulations to these Shark swimmers! All three classes (1A, 2A, and 3A) had Shark State Champions as Nicholas Caldwell (3A Champion in the 200 IM and 500 Free), Patrick Ceddia (1A Champion in the 200 Free and 500 Free), and McKayla Lightbourn (2A Champion in the 200 IM) won titles at the FHSAA finals held November 12th thru 14th at the International YMCA pool in Orlando. Patrick was a repeat champion in the 1A 200 free and 500 free, Nick was a repeat champion in the 3A 500 free, and McKayla won her 3rd straight 2A 200 IM title. On a team basis, the Booker High School girls were the top area girls team with a 6th place finish in the 2A competition, while the Riverview High School boys team was the top finishing area boys team with a 6th place finish in the 3A competition. A list of the 39 Shark State Finalists (individual events) is also posted. 1A - Three schools (Sarasota Christian, Cardinal Mooney, and St. Stephens) and 10 Shark swimmers qualified for individual events in the 1A session of this meet. Shark Results for the Class 1A meet are posted. Cardinal Mooney finished 11th overall in the boy's team category and 37th in the girl's category. As mentioned, Patrick Ceddia, won both of his events (200 and 500 free). He also led the CM boys team to a 9th place finish in the 200 free relay (with Fernando Gutierrez) and an 11th place finish in the 400 free relay (with Fernando and Carlton Krebs). Patrick also set two new Senior boys Shark records by breaking Tripp Schwenk's 50 free record from the 1980's and resetting his own 200 free record set at last year's FHSAA finals. Fernando Gutierrez had a 14th place finish in the 200 IM and a 17th place in the 100 fly; Matthew O'Donnell finished 21st in the 500 free. Tori Kontor, CM's lone girl qualifier, finished 14th in the 200 free and 22nd in the 100 free. Coach Steve Brown's Sarasota Christian boy's team finished 28th overall and was led by Sharks Rhet Rheinlander and Patrick Bucken. Rhett finished 7th in the 100 back and 22nd in the 100 free. Patrick finished 24th in the 500 free. Saint Stephens was led by Sharks Annie Berdusco, Michael Berdusco, Will Kazokas, and Ellie Berdusco. The girls team finished 41st overall and the boys finished 18th. Annie finished 16th in the 500 free and 20th in the 200 free and Ellie finished 17th in the 200 IM in her first FHSAA finals. Michael finished 13th in the 500 free and 21st in the 200 free, and Will finished 4th in the 100 back and 7th in the 100 free. 2A - Three schools (Booker, Lakewood Ranch, and Lemon Bay) and 11 Shark swimmers took part in the individual events in the 2A portion of the FHSAA finals. Booker High was led by McKayla Lightbourn, who won the 200 IM (for the third straight year) and finished 3rd in the 100 back; Mckenzie Clark finished 7th in the 500 free and 8th in the 200 free; and Meghan Buckley had a 9th place finish in the 100 backstroke and a 12th in the 200 free. The girls team also finished 9th in the 200 medley relay and 8th in the 400 free relay (with Katie Boehm) and, as mentioned, finished 6th overall in the team competition. The girls 200 medley relay team (with Danielle Valley) finished 7th and the 400 free relay (with Danielle and Raegan Sauer) finished 4th. The girls relay teams finished 5th in the 200 medley and 6th in the 400 free (with Cameron Davis). Rachel was the sole member of the Manatee team at States and single-handily accounted for the girls finishing 26th in the team competition. Good luck to all the Sharks at Districts!!! Senior 1 swimmer Johnny Silvers has verbally committed to swim for Penn State University next Fall. In what has been an active couple of weeks, Johnny becomes the fourth member of the Shark class of 2010 to commit to a D1 program. Congratulations to Johnny and his parents! Senior 1 swimmer McKayla Lightbourn has verbally committed to swim for the Florida State Seminoles next Fall. McKayla becomes the third member of the Shark class of 2010 to commit to a D1 program and also the third from this class who will swim in the ACC. McKayla, who also swims for the Bahamas, is a veteran of the Pan Am Games, the Commonwealth Games, and many other international events. She will join three of her Shark teammates from last year in Tallahassee. Congratulations to McKayla and her family! Riverview High swept the girls, boys, and combined team titles at the 3rd annual Sarasota County High School Swimming & Diving Championships held Wednesday, Oct. 14th at the Selby Aquatic Center. Sarasota High finished 2nd and Venice High finished 3rd in the combined team results in the 8 school meet. Other schools in the meet were Cardinal Mooney (4th overall), North Port (5th), Booker (6th), Out-of-Door Academy (7th), and Sarasota Christian (8th). The girls team top 3 were identical to the combined results with Riverview finishing first followed by Sarasota and Venice. Riverview High won the combined and women's team titles at the annual Tri-County High School Swimming & Diving Championships held Saturday, Oct. 10th at the Selby Aquatic Center. This meet featured 18 high school teams from the Sarasota, Manatee, and Charlotte County areas. The combined team top 3 were Riverview, followed by Charlotte High, and Sarasota High. In the women's division, Riverview was 1st, with Sarasota a close second, and Lakewood Ranch finishing in third place. In the boy's division, Charlotte High finished first, with Riverview second, and Lakewood Ranch finishing third. The Full Meet Results, Individual Shark Results, and a Photo Page are posted. Twelve Sharks have been named to the 2008-2009 Scholastic All-American Team by USA Swimming. Making the prestigious list for the third straight year were Shark swimmers Marissa Harrington and Matt Kaminske. Those making the list for the second consecutive year were Jesse Bessire, Raquel Raybon, Patrick Ceddia, and Johnny Silvers. First time honorees were Cha-cha Bugatti, Mckenzie Clark, Rachel Harrington, Nicholas Caldwell, Kirt Davis, and Marty Rauch. Nationwide, there were 1500 swimmers who were named to the team for combining athletic and academic success. Swimmers have to achieve at least a 3.50 GPA as a high school sophomore, junior or senior AND must achieve a Junior National Bonus Time Standard, or swim in a selected disability championship meet or the Open Water National Championships during the qualifying period. The Sharks again dominated the Sarasota Herald-Tribune's 2007 "All-Area High School Swimming" team. Booker High's Mckayla Lightbourn and Riverview High's Corinne Showalter shared the "Swimmer of the Year" award for the girls and Sarasota Christian's Austin Detra was named as the top boy swimmer of the year for the area. This was Corinne's third consecutive year and Austin's second straight year winning the top swimmer award. Three Shark swimmers, Mckayla Lightbourn (Booker HS), Corinne Showalter (Riverview HS), and Austin Detra (Sarasota Christian HS) made the Pinch-a-Penny All-State Team for 2007. In addition, a number of Sharks made the All-Area Team. Congratulations to all of these Shark swimmers. Three Shark Senior swimmers, Austin Detra, Blair Collins, and Sara Conner, have verbally committed to attend and swim for Division 1 colleges next fall. Detra and Collins will swim for the University of Florida Gators, while Conner will swim for the West Virginia University Mountaineers. Congratulations to these swimmers and their families! John Orban was 4th in the 500 free and 5th in the 200 IM. Sara Conner was 4th in the girls 500 free and 6th in the 200 free and single-handedly placed the Sarasota Christian girls team in 22nd place. Cardinal Mooney, with individual qualifiers Pat Ceddia, Fernando Gutierrez, Jacque Garcia, and relay qualifier Shawn Leonard, placed 17th in the boys category and 37th in the girls. Pat Ceddia had two podium finishes (2nd in the 200 free and 3rd in the 500 free), Fernando Gutierrez was 20th in the 100 back, and the boys relay team finished 13th (400 free) and 15th (200 free). Jacque Garcia was the only member of the CM girls team and finished 15th in the 200 IM. The St. Stephens team consisted solely of Shark swimmer Hayley Tilton. Hayley had a 10th place finish in the 100 free and a 15th in the 50 free. Her points led to St. Stephens 29th place finish. 1A Full Results and 1A Shark Results are available 2A - In the 2A category, two schools were represented by 7 Shark swimmers: Booker High sent 5 Sharks while Manatee High sent two to the 2A State Finals. Booker's Mckayla Lightbourn was a double state champion (200 IM and 100 breast) and broke the 15-16 Shark girls record in the 200 IM with a 2:03.78. Kata Fodor narrowly missed a state championship in the 500 free finishing 2nd by 0.02 seconds and had a 4th place in the 200 free. Meghan Buckley finished 13th in the 100 back, and Mckenzie Clark had a pair of 16th place finishes in the 200 free and 500 free. The Booker girls 200 medley relay had a 3rd place podium finish. To cap off the meet, the 4 Booker girls in 5th place overall prior to the night's final event, swam to a 2nd place in the 400 free relay vaulting to 3rd place and a podium finish in the overall team category. Tim Bradley, Booker's lone boy swimmer, had an 11th place in the 50 free and a 19th in the 100 fly, and accounted for the Booker boys 44th place overall finish. Manatee HS was represented by sisters Marissa Harrington and Rachel Harrington. Marissa, who six weeks ago injured her knee and at one point thought that she could not compete this season, swam to a 7th place finish in the 500 free and a 14th place in the 200 free. Rachel had career best times in all her swims and finished 6th in the 500 free and 7th in the 200 free. The two swimmer Manatee girls team finished 20th overall. 2A Full Results and 2A Shark Results are available 3A - In the 3A category, Riverview High had the largest contingent of Shark qualifiers by far with 14; Lakewood Ranch had 5; Sarasota had 4; and Venice High had 3. Coach Larry Shofe's 8 member Riverview girls team successfully defended their 3A state title from last year by outpointing 2nd place Gainesville Buchholz by 5.5 points. Corinne Showalter led the Riverview girls by winning the 500 free and finishing 2nd in the 200 free. The Riverview girls 200 medley relay team of Lauren Piper, Showalter, Rocky Raybon, and Becky Evenson also won a state championship in their event. Senior Blair Collins finished 4th in the 100 back and 11th in the 200 free. Becky Evenson finished 10th in the 500 free and 14th in the 100 back. Kaitlyn Plocharsky had a 20th place in the 100 back. Rocky Raybon finished 7th in the 200 IM and 12th in the 100 fly; Lauren Piper added a 2nd place in the 200 IM and a 9th in the 100 fly. Overall, the Riverview boys team finished 11th. Coach Sherwood Watts' Sarasota High girls team composed of 4 swimmers finished 10th overall in the 3A competition. Senior 1 and Cardinal Mooney HS swimmer Patrick Ceddia was named SNN Channel 6's "High School Athlete of the Week". Patrick, who just returned from National Select Camp in Colorado Springs, was featured on a segment filmed at Selby on Sunday night's (10/14) broadcast. Congratulations Patrick! Cardinal Mooney freshman, and Shark swimmer, Patrick Ceddia led his boys team to a 6th place finish and got two individual wins (200 & 500 free) at the Florida Catholic High School Swimming & Diving Championship Meet held in Altamonte Springs on Saturday, Sept. 30th. Courtney Dowling finished 6th in the 100 breast and Fernando Gutierrez was 4th in the 100 back and 6th in the 100 fly. This is Brooke's second consecutive year achieving this honor. More than 1,100 swimmers, nationwide, were named to the team for combining athletic and academic success. Swimmers have to achieve at least a 3.50 GPA as a high school sophomore, junior or senior AND must compete in an individual event in a selected national championship. Riverview High's Ryan Crete and Corinne Showalter were named as the top high school swimmers of the year from the area. Shark girls making it to the All-Area team were: Brooke Barnett, Sara Conner, and Katheryne Muth from Sarasota Christian; Blair Collins and Chelsea Gillespie from Riverview High; Ashley Largo and Kata Fodor from Booker High; Patricia Duret from Cardinal Mooney; Mandy Snell from Lakewood Ranch; and Marissa Harrington from Manatee High. Congratulations to all of these Sharks! Mandy Snell and Jason Shoemaker were again named Manatee County's top high school swimmers of the year by the Bradenton Herald. These two Senior 1 and Lakewood Ranch H.S. swimmers were honored in the December 15th edition of the Herald. Mandy, a senior, won the honor for the 3rd straight year and was the county's top girl finisher at the state 3A high school meet in November, placing 5th in the 500 free and 7th in the 200 free. Jason, also a senior, won the honor for the second straight year and was the county's top boy finisher at the state 3A meet with a 13th in the 200 IM and a 15th in the 100 breast. Marissa Harrington, a Manatee High School freshman and also a Shark Senior team swimmer, was named runner-up in the girls category. Congratulations to these three Shark swimmers!! The Sharks qualified 21 swimmers representing 7 high schools for the 2005 Florida High School Swimming Championships held Nov. 18th - 19th in Ft. Lauderdale. When it was all over, the Shark swimmers brought home 1 individual win, 2 seconds and 3 thirds in the combined 1A, 2A, 3A meet. Bringing home the win was Riverview's Ryan Crete in the 3A 500 Free (4:27.29) - also a new Shark record. Brooke Barnett, a junior at Sarasota Christian School and Ashley Largo, a junior at Pine View School, both Senior team members, have been named to the 2004-2005 Scholastic All-American Team by USA Swimming. More than 900 swimmers, nationwide, were named to the team for combining athletic and academic success. Swimmers have to achieve at least a 3.50 GPA as a high school sophomore, junior or senior AND must compete in an individual event in a selected national championship. The following Shark senior swimmers have signed college scholarships: Nicole Samilo has signed a letter of intent to attend and swim for Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL. Nicole will major in pre-med and will begin classes in the Fall. She will be swimming for Head Coach Steve Eckelkamp. Spencer Maglich has accepted a scholarship to Penn State University in State College, PA where he will swim for Head Coach Bill Dorenkott beginning in the Fall. Kim Martella and Vanessa Cox have signed scholarships to swim for Indian River Community College in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Kim intends to major in interior design beginning next Fall while Vanessa likely will steer toward Fashion Design. Both swimmers will swim for Head Coach Scott Kimmelman. Becky Leonard has signed an athletic scholarship to swim for Eastern Illinois University in Charleston, Illinois. Becky will major in communications and is set to begin classes in the Fall. She will swim for Head Swimming Coach Ray Padovan. Lindsey Largo has signed a full scholarship and will swim for West Virginia University in Morgantown, WV next Fall. Lindsey will major in education and be swimming for Head Coach Sergio Lopez. Jordan Hershberger will join his brother Benji at Ohio State University in the fall. Shark Senior team swimmer Lindsey Largo has signed a national letter of intent to attend and swim for West Virginia University next fall. According to a WVU press release, swimming head coach Sergio Lopez said "Lindsey is a terrific person who will help us immediately in many key areas. She has improved rapidly the last two years, and we're excited to work with her for the next four years." Lindsey plans on majoring in education at WVU. Mandy Snell and Jason Shoemaker were named Manatee County's top high school swimmers of 2004 by the Bradenton Herald. These two Senior 1 and Lakewood Ranch H.S. swimmers were honored in the November 27th edition of the Herald. Mandy, a junior, won the same honor last year and was the county's top girl finisher at the state 3A high school meet in November, placing 2nd in the 200 free and 4th in the 500 free. Jason, also a junior, finished fourth at Regionals in the 200 I.M. Nicole Samilo and Kim Martella, also Shark Senior team and Lakewood Ranch H.S. swimmers, were named as runners-up in the girls category. Congratulations to all four of these Shark swimmers!! The Sharks qualified 19 swimmers representing 7 high schools for the 2004 Florida High School Swimming Championships held Nov. 5th - 6th at the University of Florida pool in Gainesville. When it was all said and done the Shark swimmers brought home 3 wins, 2 seconds and a third in the newly formatted combined 1A, 2A, 3A meet. Bringing home the wins were Booker's Ashley Largo in the 2A 200 Free (1:53.91) and the 500 Free (4:57.91), and Sarasota's Spencer Maglich in the 3A 200 Free (1:41.60). Second place finishes were achieved by Booker's Lindsey Largo in the 2A 500 Free (4:57.96) and Lakewood Ranch's Mandy Snell in the 3A 200 Free (1:52.31). Once again, the success of the Sharks is a credit to both the swimmers' and their coaches' hard work. Congratulations to all of these Sharks!
The Sarasota High School Boy's Swim Team won the Florida High School 3A Championships for the second consecutive year last weekend (Nov. 21) in Ft. Lauderdale. Click for PHOTOS of the weekend. The team was lead by Shark swimmers, T.J. Lathrop (5th in the 200 IM and 5th in the 100 fly), Matt Phillips (2nd in the 100 breast and 6th in the 200 IM), Michael Swick (8th in the 500 free), Spencer Maglich (2nd in the 50 free and 3rd in the 100 free), and Nick Seuch (5th in the 200 free and 6th in the 100 fly). The Boys had 1 first and 2 thirds in the relay events. The relay team of Swick, Phillips, Lathrop, and Maglich got the win in the 200 medley relay; the team including Seuch, Swick, and Maglich took 3rd in the 200 free relay; while the team of Seuch, Lathrop, Swick and Phillips took 3rd in the 400 free relay. The Sarasota Boys racked up 230 points outdistancing 2nd place Altamonte Springs with 199 points.
Other top 16 finishes by Shark boys in the 3A championship included Brian Cogburn (Venice) who placed 15th in the 100 back. On the girl's side, Annie Babicz (Sarasota) led the way with wins in the 100 breast and 100 fly. This was Annie's 4th straight 100 breast 3A State title and her 3rd straight 100 fly title. Courtney Hudak (Riverview) finished 10th in the 200 IM and 10th in the 100 back. Sarah Brunette (Sarasota) finished 16th in the 500 free. In the 200 Medley Relay, the Sarasota girl's team of Shaina Drew, Babicz, Jennifer Burnside, and Brunette took 9th; while the Riverview team including Hudak, Amber Butyn, and Morgan Maglich took 11th place. In the 200 freestyle relay the Sarasota team of Babicz, Brunette, Burnside, and Sarah Trimble took 12th place; the Venice team including Morgan Tweedie, Mary Pfost, and Lacie Smith finished 13th; while the Riverview team including Kristen Murphy and Butyn finished 15th. In the 400 freestyle relay the Riverview team including Hudak, Murphy and Maglich finished 7th; while the Venice team including Smith, Pfost and Tweedie took 13th place.
