The Sarasota Herald-Tribune's 2009 "All-Area High School Swimming" team was once again dominated by Shark swimmers. Booker High's Mckayla Lightbourn was named "Swimmer of the Year" for the girls and Cardinal Mooney's Patrick Ceddia was named as the boy "Swimmer of the Year" for the area. This was McKayla's second "Swimmer of the Year" award having shared it in 2007 with Corinne Showalter and Patrick's second consecutive year winning the top swimmer award. Shark girls making it to the All-Area team were: Jesse Bessire, Shelby Leonard, and Katheryne Muth from Sarasota High; Rebekah Baker from Lakewood Ranch High; Ava Jones, Ashlee Linn, and Rocky Raybon from Riverview High; Meghan Buckley and Mckenzie Clark from Booker High; Rachel Harrington from Manatee High; and Tori Kontor from Cardinal Mooney. Shark boys making it to the All-Area Team were: Johnny Silvers from Lakewood Ranch; Kirt Davis and James Pagan from Sarasota High; Nicholas Caldwell, Mufaddal Kadibhai, Yusuf Kadibhai, and Marty Rauch from Riverview High; Michael Berdusco and Will Kazokas from St. Stephens; Fernando Gutierrez from Cardinal Mooney; and Rhet Rheinlander from Sarasota Christian. The newest Shark has arrived. Riley Corinne Brown, joined the team at 11:11 am, Monday, Jan. 18th, at 9 lbs., 1 oz. - 21 inches. Mom and baby are doing well, Dad says he's "still trying to recover". Congratulations, Brown family. One more and you'll have a girls' relay team.
The Sharks swam at the GCST Winter Invitational held Jan. 16th - 17th at the FGCU pool and came away with team wins in the combined, girls, and boys categories. Although no Shark records were broken over the weekend, several new J.O. cuts were attained by Shark swimmers. Making new J.O. cuts were: Patrick Amistoso, Axel Auge, Ellen Berdusco, Samantha Cahoone, Rees Cattermole, Sophie Cattermole, Genesis Dolgetta, Cindy Dong, Faryn Duff, Matthew Garcia, Tyler Habib, Nicholas Hernandez-Tome, Bethany Leap, Matthew O'Donnell, Carter Page, Lexy Raybon, Laura Toth, and Madison Tyle. Finishing in the Top 10 high points of their respective age groups were:

Riverview's Nicholas Caldwell and Cardinal Mooney's Patrick Ceddia made the 2009 / 2010 Pinch-a-Penny All-State High School Swimming and Diving Team. The criteria changed somewhat this year with the fastest swimmers in each event making the 18 member team. Patrick received his honors in the 200 freestyle while Nicholas made it for the 200 IM and the 500 freestyle. The entire team can be seen at the Pinch-a-Penny site. Congratulations to Nick and Pat !!
From Coach Watts: Upcoming Schedule: Friday, Jan. 15th - YMCA make up meet at 6:30 pm (this is for swimmers who need a 3rd Y-meet; informal with no fee, we will make up the heats behind the blocks). Gulf Coast Meet (Jan. 16th & 17th) - meet starts at 8:30 am; warm-up (Jr. & Sr.) - 6:45 am; warm-up (Gold & below) - 7:40 am For those not attending the GC meet - practice Saturday is 8:30 to 10:30 am for Black to Senior. Monday, Jan. 18th - MLK holiday - no school, we will run our regular Saturday morning schedule. Tuesday, Jan. 19th - Professional Day - no school for most. Regular Sat. morning schedule. We will run a 4:30 to 6:30 pm practice for those who cannot make the morning practices. Saturday, Jan. 30th - Y-State pre-meet party at the Berlin YMCA Teen Center 5:30 to 8:30 pm; all swimmers welcome. Linda Theofanous will be Party Chair. See attached Coaching Changes schedule.
The Bradenton Herald has selected Patrick Ceddia of Cardinal Mooney HS as their 2009 All-Area High School Swimmer of the Year. This is the 3rd year in a row that Patrick has earned this honor. He was honored in the January 3rd edition of the local paper. Receiving "honorable mention" honors were Shark swimmers: Tori Kontor, Jacque Garcia, Fernando Gutierrez, Carlton Krebs, and Matt O'Donnell (Cardinal Mooney HS); Rebekah Baker, Raegan Sauer, Gillian Vogel, John Silvers, Phil Czupryna, James Cascone, and Matt Polk (Lakewood Ranch HS); Rachel Harrington (Manatee HS); Annie Berdusco, Ellie Berdusco, Will Kazokas, and Michael Berdusco (St. Stephens HS).
