horizontal rule  Shark Appreciation Night @ Chipotle  -  7/3/09
horizontal rule
Monday, July 13th from 5 - 9 pm is Shark appreciation night at the Chipotle Mexican Grill on US #41 directly across from Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Chipotle is a new sponsor of the Shark swim team. They will be providing one of their monster burritos free to every Shark swimmer who attends and wears their team shirt. It would be a great gesture if paying family members would attend as well to return the favor.

horizontal rule  August Practice Schedule  -  7/3/09
horizontal rule
From Coach Klein: Dear families and athletes - During most of the month of August we will continue to run our program with a "Break Schedule". There will be two levels of practices offered in the AM and PM, Monday through Thursday, for 90 minutes each. The practices will be focused on "skills & drills" as well as "gimmicks & games" though truthfully more of the former and less of the latter. The two groupings for practices will be 12 & up as well as 11 & younger for white through Senior 1. Each is what we call an "all comers" practice, another words all 12 & older or 11 & younger regardless of ability level.

If the family is going on vacation during that time the suggestion is to be on vacation, be active but you need not go out of your way to find a place to swim. If you are in town it is in your best interest to continue working on becoming a better swimmer and athlete. Right now the schedule looks to be the following, with the exception of the swimmers training for Junior Nationals during the week of Aug. 4th.

Tuesday (8/4) thru Friday (8/7), Monday (8/10) thru Thursday (8/13), and Monday (8/17) thru Thursday (8/20):
12 & Up 7:15 – 8:45 am    or     3:30 – 5:00 pm
11 & Un 9:00 – 10:30 am     or     5:00 – 6:30 pm

Monday August 24th     First day of school, no practice
Tuesday August 25th    Begin school year schedule

Several Shark swimmers were in Ft. Myers the weekend of June 12th - 14th to compete in National and State level Open Water competitions.

After attending the 2009 National Open Water Select Camp, Marissa Harrington and Kata Fodor swam in the the USA National Open Water 5K held Friday, June 12th, and finished 11th and 12th, respectively, closely following winner Chloe Sutton with times of 1:01:04 and 1:01:05. A photo of the National Camp participants is linked HERE.

On Saturday, the water was calm and it was a beautiful day in Ft Myers, but the age group swimmers had jellyfish and baby brown stingrays to deal with. The water was extremely warm and not the usual temp in which the kids are used to swimming. The following boys participated in the Jr. Olympics 2.5K: Patrick Wall won the event with a 30:22, Roman Zaremba placed 4th with a 32:03, and Dirk Hamel-Wood was 6th with a 32:08. The Sharks only female swimmer, Meghan Buckley, placed 5th in Sr. Champs with a 34:12. SYS placed 6th overall at the Open Water Jr. Olympics with only 3 boys representing the Sharks, and 11th overall in Sr. Champs with only one Shark swimmer. Congratulations to these swimmers!

horizontal rule  More on Suits  -  6/2/09
horizontal rule
From Coach Klein: The attached PDF file will further clarify the USA Swimming position on suits for competition. We have entered a new era and these rulings have to be created to ensure fair and equitable competition for everyone. FINA, the international parent organization, has made a determination of which suits currently meet their standards. USA Swimming automatically adopts whatever rulings are made by FINA. The basics are that 202 High Tech suits have been passed for competition while 136 have been denied. Those denied can apply with a new variation, so the list might change. All the suits we use from our sponsor, Speedo, are okay for competition.

Of note in the file is the comment that suits not on the list, that are not consistent with the High Tech materials, are still allowed [such as our Speedo Endurance], but they are limited for males - knees to navel, and women - hips to shoulders. None of this affects what we have been doing, we remain ahead of the curve. We will keep everyone abreast of any further changes.
