The Sharks took 117 swimmers to the Highlander Long Course Invitational held in Orlando April 25th through 27th. Many Sharks had notable meets, but none more than 10 year old Nancy Hu who not only won all six of her events, but also set a new Shark record in the 10 & under girls 100 meter butterfly.

There were also many new J.O. cuts made by the Sharks as 31 swimmers had new qualifying times including: Tucker Atkins, Rebekah Baker, Ellen Berdusco, Annalee Bowers, Samantha Cahoone, Sarah Cahoone, Alex Catena, Jack Clark, Reid Colett, Talia Daniel, Keanan Dols, Michelle Dols, Lily Donoghue, Matthew Garcia, Karl Hegwein, Natalie Hegwein, Yusuf Kadibhai, Vanessa Knoch, Bethany Leap, Peyton Leeson, Joanna Murphy, Connor O'Brien, John Pelton, Matthew Pelton, Stacia Pietraszun, Derek Pridemore, Gabby Theofanous, Patrick Wall, Charlotte Wilhelm, Chyna Yelding, and Roman Zaremba.

Event winners were: Cha-cha Bugatti (100 & 200 back, 200 IM, 400 free); Patrick Ceddia (200 & 400 free); Mark Cox (100 & 200 fly); Cameron Davis (100 fly, 200 & 400 free); Michelle Dols (200 free); Nancy Hu (50, 100 & 200 free, 100 fly, 100 back, 200 IM); Michael Knoch (50 free, 50 back, 50 fly, 50 breast); Vanessa Knoch (100 breast); Campbell Lee (100 fly, 100 breast, 200 free, 200 IM); McKayla Lightbourn (400 IM); Ashlee Linn (100 & 200 back); John Orban (200 breast); Jesi Piper (400 IM); Derek Pridemore (200 back); Patrick Wall (50, 200 & 400 free, 100 breast, 200 IM); and Roman Zaremba (50 & 100 back, 100 free).

Forty-three age-group Sharks swam in the Friday Night at the Races held April 18th at the North Shore pool in St. Petersburg. This was the first long course meet of the season for most of these Sharks. Making new J.O. cuts were: Patrick Bowers (50 back); Jack Clark (50 fly); Keanan Dols (50 free); Matthew Garcia (50 back & 50 fly); Bethany Leap (100 breast); Tyler O'Brien (50 breast); and Roman Zaremba (50 fly). Finishing in the Top 3 of their individual events were: Patrick Bowers (3rd - 50 back); Samantha Cahoone (2nd - 50 breast, 3rd - 50 fly); Cameron Davis (2nd - 100 back); Campbell Lee (2nd - 50 back & 50 breast, 3rd - 50 free); Drew Maddy (3rd - 100 breast); Liam McKane (2nd - 50 fly, 3rd - 100 back); Tyler O'Brien (3rd - 50 breast); and Roman Zaremba (2nd - 100 back, 3rd - 50 free).

Twenty Sharks swam in the Saturday Races meet hosted by the Charlotte County Bluefins in Punta Gorda on April 12th. Finishing in the top 3 of their individual events were: Austin Averett (1st - 100 IM, 2nd - 200 free, 3rd - 50 back); Katie Boehm (1st - 50 free, 2nd - 50 back); Sophie Cattermole (2nd - 50 free, 3rd - 50 breast); Franki-Lin Colett (3rd - 50 free, 50 back, 50 breast); Reid Colett (1st - 50 fly & 50 back, 2nd - 50 breast); Keanan Dols (1st - 50 fly & 100 IM); Michelle Dols (2nd - 50 breast & 50 back); Cindy Dong (1st - 25 fly & 25 breast); Megan Griffiths (1st - 50 back, 3rd - 50 fly); Jennifer Litzen (3rd - 100 IM); Maureen Murphy (1st - 50 breast, 2nd - 50 fly); Santi Ruvira (1st - 50 breast, 2nd - 50 back & 50 fly); Chinami Wade (3rd - 50 back); and Chyna Yelding (2nd - 100 back).

horizontal rule  Sharks Sweep Y-Nats for 2nd Straight Year  -  4/5/08

The Sharks took what was probably their largest team ever (42 swimmers) to Ft. Lauderdale, April 1st thru 4th, to defend their 2007 YMCA National Short Course Championship title. Four days and forty-two events later, the Sharks had swept the girls, boys, and combined titles for the second straight year, besting second place Middle Tyger YMCA by almost double their points in the combined category (1,036.5 points to 538 points). The Shark girls more than doubled second place Triangle Area YMCA's points (648 to 300), and the boys team beat second place Schroeder YMCA by more than 100 points (388.5 to 266.5). All in all it was a productive week for the Sharks as there were many personal best times, Top 3 finishes, and numerous Shark records broken.

Corinne Showalter led the way for the Sharks with two National titles and two 2nd places in her four events. She also broke the National YMCA record in the 400 yard IM. Eight of ten Senior Shark relay records were broken at the meet: the girls 200 free relay team of Katheryne Muth, Ashlee Linn, Blair Collins, and Hayley Tilton set a new Shark record with a time of 1:35.62 beating the old record set in the 1990's; the girls 400 free relay team of Linn, Showalter, Muth and Sara Conner set a new mark of 3:24.31 smashing the old Shark record by more than 4 seconds also set in the 1990's; the 200 medley relay team of Shelby Leonard, Conner, Showalter, and Muth set a new mark with a 1:45.83 breaking the old mark set in 2006; the girls 400 medley team of Linn, McKayla Lightbourn, Showalter, and Muth set the new mark with a 3:48.46 breaking the 2007 record by more than 4 seconds; the boys 400 free relay team of Mark Cox, Austin Detra, Patrick Ceddia, and Drew Crete set a new Shark record with a 3:06.65 breaking the old mark set in the 1990's; the boys 800 free team of Detra, Cox, John Orban, and Ceddia broke the old record set in last year's meet by almost 5 seconds with a 6:43.98; the boys 200 medley relay team of Orban, Tyler Revels, Cox, and Detra set a new mark with a 1:35.70 narrowly breaking a 1990's record; and finally, the boys 400 medley team of Crete, Revels, Cox, and Ceddia broke the 1990's era record with a 3:28.10. Ten individual Shark records were set: Ashlee Linn set five new records, four of which she already had - three in the 15-16 category (100 free, 100 back, and 200 IM) and two in the Senior/Open category (100 free and 100 back); Corinne Showalter reset two of her own records in the Senior/Open category (200 IM and 400 IM) - the 400 IM by over 6 seconds; and Mark Cox reset records in the 15-16 category (100 fly and 200 fly) and in the Senior/Open category (200 fly).

Sharks finishing in the Top 3 of their individual events were: Cha-cha Bugatti (2nd place - 1000 free, 3rd - 500 free); Blair Collins (3rd - 200 back); Austin Detra (2nd - 1000 free and 1650 free, 3rd - 500 free); McKayla Lightbourn (3rd - 400 IM); Ashlee Linn (2nd - 200 free and 200 IM, 3rd - 100 free and 100 back); John Orban (3rd - 1000 free and 1650 free); Raquel Raybon (3rd - 200 fly); and Corinne Showalter (National Champion - 200 free and 200 IM; 2nd - 200 fly and 400 IM). Other Top 16 podium finishes were turned in by: Jesse Bessire (9th - 200 fly, 13th - 400 IM, 15th - 200 IM); Cha-cha Bugatti (4th - 1650 free); Patrick Ceddia (4th - 500 free, 5th - 1000 free and 1650 free); Mckenzie Clark (14th - 1000 free); Blair Collins (13th - 100 back); Sara Conner (6th - 1000 free, 8th - 1650 free, 13th - 500 free); Mark Cox (5th - 200 fly, 12th - 100 fly and 200 free); Drew Crete (5th - 200 back, 13th - 100 back); Kirt Davis (7th - 1650 free, 8th - 500 free, 10th - 1000 free); Austin Detra (16th - 200 free); Becky Evenson (14th - 200 back); Marissa Harrington (5th - 1000 free, 6th - 500 free, 7th - 1650 free, 10th - 200 free); Rachel Harrington (9th - 1000 free, 10th - 200 fly and 1650 free, 12th - 500 free); Matt Kaminske (4th - 1000 free, 6th - 1650 free, 13th - 500 free); Shelby Leonard (5th - 100 back, 8th - 200 back); McKayla Lightbourn (7th - 200 IM, 10th - 200 back); Katheryne Muth (10th - 50 free, 12th - 200 free, 14th - 500 free); John Orban (6th - 400 IM, 10th - 500 free); Jesi Piper (9th - 400 IM); Raquel Raybon (4th - 400 IM, 8th - 1000 free, 15th - 500 free); Ashley Reid (10th - 200 IM); Derek Samies (14th - 1000 free); and John Silvers (10th - 1650 free, 12th - 1000 free).

horizontal rule  Sharks Help Florida Swimming to All-Stars Win  -  3/30/08

Sixteen Shark age-group swimmers were selected to the Florida Swimming all-star team and helped in the dual meet win over Florida Gold over the March 29th-30th weekend at the Indian River C.C. pool in Ft. Pierce. In the process, five new Shark short-course records were set and two records were tied: Spence Atkins set two new records in the girls' 10 & under category besting the 100 IM and 100 breaststroke marks, and tied Annie Babicz's 50 breast record from 1996; sister Shealyn Atkins set a new Shark record in the girls' 10 & under 50 backstroke; Nancy Hu also set two new Shark records in the girls' 10 & under category by beating the 1971 50 free record and then by beating her own record in the 100 fly; and, on the boys' side, Ian Amistoso tied his own Shark record in the 11-12 100 breaststroke.

Sharks finishing in the Top 3 of their individual events were: Ian Amistoso (2nd - 50 & 100 breast, 3rd - 50 free); Shealyn Atkins (2nd - 50 & 100 back, 3rd - 200 free); Spence Atkins (1st - 50 & 100 breast, 2nd - 200 IM, 3rd - 50 & 100 fly); Faryn Duff (2nd - 50 & 100 fly); Nancy Hu (2nd - 100 fly, 3rd - 200 IM); Campbell Lee (3rd - 200 free & 200 IM); Kara Plocharsky (3rd - 500 free); Andy Watts (3rd - 1650 free); and Roman Zaremba (1st - 100 back, 3rd - 50 back).

horizontal rule  McKayla Lightbourn Becomes Newest U.S. Olympic Trial Qualifier  -  3/29/08

Senior 1 swimmer McKayla Lightbourn swam a 2:20.09 in the finals of the 200 meter IM Saturday night at the Carifta Games in Aruba to become the newest Shark U.S. Olympic Trial Qualifier. Great job McKayla!

horizontal rule  Coach Shofe Named 2007 Florida HS Swimming "Coach of the Year"  -  3/27/08

Riverview High School and Shark Head Coach Larry Shofe was recently named the Florida Dairy Farmers Girls' Swimming Coach of the Year for the 2007 Florida High School season. Coach Shofe led the Riverview HS girls' team to their second consecutive FHSAA 3A State Championship in 2007. The Press Release is posted. Congratulations to Coach Larry Shofe!

From Coach Watts: The Summer Junior Olympics has been extended to a FULL FOUR DAY FORMAT (competition begins Thursday morning) beginning this Summer. The Shark hotel block has been extended to include Wednesday night, however, Shark parents who have already made their hotel reservations need to contact their hotel to add Wednesday night if needed.
